Fedextruck FedEx Hits Reverse

1/5/09

Quote:
For the first time in its 35-year history, FedEx is getting smaller.
From its signature air express network to the trucks in its far-flung domestic business, FedEx is starting 2009 by grounding aircraft, parking other equipment, cutting capital spending and even cutting executive pay to get the company's scale in line with a declining shipping market.
The cost reductions add up to about $1 billion in FedEx's current fiscal year, which ends May 31, 2009, and at least another $600 million in the following year, cutbacks that appear to be based on equal parts uncertainty and pessimism about the direction of expedited shipping.

A FedEx package car driver we know is not allowed overtime work. If he works a Saturday, he must take a weekday off during the following week.

A relative bought FedEx stock when the price of fuel dropped during the past few months. I thought that was naive because high fuel prices were offset by the fuel surcharge. I explained what the drop in volume would do to profit margin and stock price. I explained the attacks on FedEx's independent contractor system. It seems that FedEx may be in a good position if they survive until the recovery.

Fed Ex will make it through this tough economy without a doubt. At what cost to their employees is the only thing in question. They seem to be going the way of other giant corporations unfortunately. By that I mean they feel that people are expendable. As a result of that their quality of service and reputation will be tarnished. Take care of your people and your people will take care of your customers.

Perhaps, FedEx lost a court case regarding independent contractors.

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—FedEx Corp. is changing its package pickup and delivery system in New Hampshire to move away from reliance on single-route contract truck drivers.

The majority of the court cases against Fedex are pertaining to the P&D(pick up and delivery drivers, small package vans). The New Hampshire case is more toward the union. For the most part the linehaul drivers (OTR) are very happy and not participating in any of the cases.
