| I believe you meant 22cpm taxable. The remaining 11cpm is untaxed. I feel certain you didn't mean to mislead.

| Well, now it's 20 cents, with 2 cents just "disappearing" as I was told and a new starting wage of 31 pennies a mile. Still, company ran per diem is a scam, and leads some people to believe that the 2 pennies that just go the way of the dodo end up in the coffers of the temple in SLC. |

| Sad Panda, why do you stay at Knight? I have yet to read a positive comment on them by you. Lots of other companies, large and small, out there, if Knight is so bad, why do you stay? |

| I ran the numbers on another thread comparing per diem to full pay. In that scenario not taking per diem won out by a couple of thousand over the year. The bottom line to the per diem question is this... If your deductions at the end of the year are not greater than the personal deduction offered by the IRS or to put that another way, if you do not itemize your deductions, Per diem is most probably a good deal. Without itemizing, perdiem would lower your adjusted gross income and you would pay less in tax while bringing home about the same amount. In fact per diem is likely to increase your weekly net. However, if you itemize, you would have to run a what-if scenario to see what works for you based on your reality. You can run this comparison using Turbo Tax or whatever program you can get your hands on. Put in all the information you used last year but instead of using real income make assumptions based on the number of miles and the pay package you get from your company with and without per diem. This is the only way you can prove to yourself which is better for you. You shouldn't have to pay for the software because typically you pay for the software when you actually file taxes. To do the comparison you stop before you file so you never even get to the part where you pay.

Knight has gone to the trucking turd bowl in the last couple of months, and I plan on leaving after a year, which most likely means I'll be folded into a different area. |

Plus if you do a lot of sitting, you aren't making any money, but you can claim days away from home. So while I would have made $27 dollars more net if I was on Knight's per diem plan last week, at the end of the year I can deduct $229 by taking 80% of $41 a day IRS, or $32.80 per day. Right now I'm at 175 days for the year (appox) so I am looking at $5740 in deductions for per diem alone. Just means I'll get a good party coupon at the end of the year and a warm fuzzy feeling for helping out people to lazy to work! |

While I had a terrible 6 weeks around the first of the year, it's picked up considerably since then. Bottom line is that there are still more trucks in the USA than freight to fill them, so... |
