In the era of 2005-2007, the E7 427 and a 460 seem to be very common. Any opinions on these, issues, people with experience?

A few trucks for sale I've seen with these two options.

I have a friend with two e7 macks, both have over 1.6 million on them. Pulling 90k plus containers to the port in Norfolk everyday. They've had minor issues and both have had new rods and mains at 1 million. Easy to work on and parts are fairly priced. If and when I get another truck I will be looking at that vintage very closely

Those would be EGR engines. I've heard good and bad about them. Known for emissions issues (but aren't they all?). Aside from that, I've heard a lot of great things about them. Great on fuel as well.

But if I were buying a Mack, I'd be looking at pre 04. Same trucks and engines but without the emissions headaches

Agreed.....made a lot of money with mine BUT 04 up is not an E7...it's an AC I think...check that.

Back to the E7 tho....and my exp....always started rough cold....shook, banged , smoked.....solid performer. My 380 pulled 80k at 70 no problem. 5.mpg and as low as 4.4 into a headwind but still rolling hard.

Weak oil pump...Mack has a good redesign. Bull gear has a nut issue...comes off. Several sensor issues....all solved with a paper clip pending repairs.

Proprietary parts not easily found ..... has to come from Mack.

All in all yep...I would own a fleet of them. Take care of it and she rides hard and long with no complaints.

my e-7 460 is a solid runner. pulls good, good fuel millage. mine is a good cold starter better than my 60 series detroit. i have started it at -2 after a long cold soak without being plugged in. i normally try to make sure its plugged in when that cold though

04's was the devils step child 05 and up they had the emmisions, turbos, fan clutch, fuel lines, issues dealt with and are solid performers that egr valve will cost you a solid 1mpg though in alot of applications

I'm looking at an 07 Rawhide with the 460 in it. Price is ok, truvk is clean, has a little over 600,000 miles (1mil kms). What should I look for as far as engine issues? How far will they generally go before needing in frame? Are parts/service a lot more expensive?
    Thanks.

    ch2.jpg I had a 2000 E7 460. Grossed 140,000 all it's life. Another local company had a fleet of them also.

Mine was one of the ones that got out of the factory with casting sand still in it, which cooked 5 air dryers and compressors before we got it all flushed out.
But other than the ones that had that problem, there was an update for a higher pressure oil pump and something in the valve train (mine dropped a valve, but was good after update.)

As for the electronic faults, years later they found the cause to be a bad mass ground point under the dash (kinda straight down from the front A-pillar....that has a ton of ground wires going to one point.)

Aside from getting those bugs out it was excellent on fuel and could just about pull with my friends 475 Cat's and 500 Detroits. They will easily go well over a million miles after the updates. Like the old Mack E6's they seem to just keep going and going.
I don't know how the newer 04 and up ones were though.
