Actually, I'm stongly considering it. When I started out I understood that Household Movers Gide was zipcode to zip code and practical was more or less address to address. So being how our mileage bonus works I didn't want short miles to keep me under any bonus threshold. Besides everyone I talk to is on practical or would like to be. I've heard many explanations of the difference and turns out they were all wrong at least to some degree as I came to learn today.
see when goggling hhg vs. Practical top results came from this site which were truckers who apparently were as confused as I was. So I finally got to a FAQ's on Randy McNally's milemaker website, ya know the software that dispatchers use for routing, and there was the answer from the horse's mouth. I will summarize and then later post a link to where I read it:

Both are zipcode to zipcode. HHG is shortest TRUCK route and practice takes time into account which I characterize as fastest route. But both are Truck routes allowing for 80k and 13'6". So our company pays 6% more on newbie side of scale and 5% more on experienced side of pay scale(2 cents across board) for HHG vs. Practical in an effort, I assume, to compensate for diff in shorter route paid.

Now I almost always have heard there is an avg of 10% diff between the two but once I understood short route vs fast route I run some routes that I be done recently through Randy's intelliroute gps. What I found was a 2 to 3% diff in miles meaning I would have been in the$ by 3-4% on these routes.

Please don't make a pay decision based upon this thread as I'm not sure I have all my facts straight but I may be getting close enough for me to jump over to hhg and test it out. But please do your own research and don't believe everything you read or hear. A lot of good intention folks just have there facts mixed up so find out for yourself.

I just wonder what would happen if you LOGGED only the miles HHG paid?

We log what we drive and are fortunate that company let's us choose the route we want to drive. Basically just get from a point a to b in an efficient manner.

Also I would love to have someone talk me out of changing and would like to figure out how to get my hands on some software like milemaker even in a demonstration format.

But if what you drive is 10% more than what you are paid, wouldn't it be nice to log what you are paid?

If you mean if we could get paid hub miles, Absolutely! As far as logging the electronic logs aren't flexible and by this time next year the entire fleet will have them as everyone will have 2008 trucks or newer.

Well in my (small) mind, you should either get paid the actual hub miles, or be able to only log the miles (on paper of course, won't work with an E-log) that the tariff says it is, so that you could have more miles to run in a week.

Can't argue with that. Id choose hub miles but our hours are more valuable than many things we have to waste them on.

I would say that's a tough question unless you know in advance how many miles they pay HHG and how many practical. Especially in large states/cities this could differ quite a bit. One trip may pay better in HHG while another trip may pay better in practical. What would the bottom line be? I think that would be hard to answer. As for me I prefer to get there as fast as I can. That way I hit "ready for dispatch" sooner, thus improving my chances of getting more miles for the week.

Sully - does it account for the "land mass" in a zip code. Example being let's say your going from 40511 (Lex, KY) to 32234 (Baldwin FL). Lexington KY (land mass wize) is a small area where as Baldwin FL is huge. So I guess I am saying you may have to travel more miles with in the zip code just to get to the customer, especially in rual areas. Where as in Practical it's more of a direct route to the actual address.

But we all know the most direct route is not always an option with truck hazards and all.

Not sure that makes sense - but you're pretty smart and will do what's right for you.
