Pre-Approved by Millis

I officially applied for Millis and was accepted provided I attend their MTI
training (I have my CDL but have no recent OTR exp). This is the letter they send out:

========================

MTI is proud to offer you this opportunity to obtain the best truck driver training in the industry at only a
fraction of the cost of most schools.

Please give us a call upon receipt of this acceptance letter to schedule an appointment for your training.

We have only a limited number of openings weekly. A $100 non-refundable deposit will be required at time of scheduling.
You will be required to have a Class “A” learners permit from the state you are a resident of before attending class along with a current DOT physical (within 60 days).

Don’t pass up this opportunity to obtain high quality training. Upon successful completion of the training
you will be awarded a chance for employment with MILLIS TRANSFER INC .
If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call at anytime.

==================

Anyone have an issue with what I highlighted in RED above?
I emailed the recruiter back and didnt hear anything.

It seems from reading this, that I could attend MTI and then end up owing $$ and not having a job at the end. It "SEEMS" that way based on the way I read this....

Thanks for the reply...
I still find the wording on this a bit concerning and the fact that my emails were not responded to didnt help.

Are you happy working for them?
Things going well?
Are you getting miles, especially after the initial 6months or so?

Unless you mess up real bad you should'nt have a problem. The wording is there for a reason. If they said you would be given a job and you didnt know how to drive when you completed there training. Well then you could sue them for breaking a contract.

..I love the phrase "Awarded a chance" ...

What (technically) is to stop a company from asking you for the down payment money..having you sign a contract (I am sure) and then completing school and for 'some' reason not getting hired - and then being stuck with a bill of $5k+ and no job.

Obviously if one can't hack school and pass, then they shouldn't be driving but it seems more than just a way to 'weed' out incompetent drivers here.

It has happened out there with some of the larger carriers. It happened to a Roehl driver but worse.

Completed school. Passed.
Went with a trainer through their EVO 1/2/3 stages.
Got back to the terminal after 8000 some miles.
Took a road test and Roehl told him he couldn't back up to their
satisfaction and to LEAVE - even though he PASSED in school weeks before and had great reviews from the trainers he spent time with.

Now?

He owes $3600 to Roehl....and isnt even working for them anymore.

Thats the sorta crap that bothers me.
I know I don't know both sides of the story, but just knowing this happened is cause enough for concern..at least to me.

Maybe I am paranoid.

You forgot to mention that the driver you are talking about already had his CDL, and was supposedly experienced.
He had a short time OTR and some local driving.
Could be he had a brain fart day. Happens to everyone. I have had days where that hole could be large enough for 2 trucks, and I cannot get it in there to save my rear.
Most training company's will give you a legitimate chance.
They know that out of 100 people that come to the school only 20-30 of them will ever drive OTR more than 6 months in there lifetimes, and only 15-20 of them will driver more than a year or so.
People can say it is a job all they want.
But it is a lifestyle just as much. Maybe they can do the job. I would say out of that 100 people that 70 of them can do the job.
Why are the others leaving then? They cannot handle the lifestyle that goes with the job.
