Ok so let me begin by saying the 15 hour bus ride down to Allentown pa, was exciting, i was really looking forward to this truck driving job.
First day of orientation (spelling) was 9 hours of paper work and cbt (computer base training).
When i finally got to meet my trainer on Thursday i was excited like a little boy on Christmas morning, he was an older man, I’ll say late sixty’s. we introduced our self’s , he explained what he expected of me and handed me the keys to the truck and told me to set up the top bunk and then come get him.
When i opened the door i was overcome by the putrid smell of dirty laundry and urine (I’ll get back to that) and cigarettes. Cigarette smells i can take. hell i smoke.
I looked up at the top bunk and noticed a bunch of his stuff so i called him on the phone and was told to leave it alone and make my bunk around it, (WTF this is supposed to be MY space for the next six weeks).
I did the best i could setting up the top bunk with the limited space that was left me. No bigger than a coffee table.
I told him i was ready and we set off to pick up a load and head down to Atlanta ga. 900 miles away. we stopped that night in a Wal-Mart parking lot and i ran and got a deli sandwich for dinner 10.30pm (had not eaten, showered since 4.30 am.) trying to sleep in the cramped space of the child like coffin i was in was next to impossable.now the urine smell, instead of getting out of the truck this guy is peeing in a 5 gallon bucket in the truck (yuck) that’s fine if your alone. The wind was blowing about 50-60 mph and the rig was rocking and a rolling and i thought i was going to fly right out of the top bunk.
Morning comes i do my thing get a coffee and we are rolling he states to me we'll stop for breakfast in a bit. lunch time were stilling rolling we stop around 5 pm, and i tell him I’m goanna get some dinner he replies no time, grab a snack you'll be fine (wtf) were rolling again (oh I’ve been doing all the driving in this high wind and i am wiped out) ok so I’m finally out of driving time and now we stop at a rest area for the night. I hit the vending machine for dinner a Twix bar, bag of chips and a bottle of water....mmmmmm.yummie. Another sleepless night (well maybe 30 minutes max) morning comes and same thing no place to get something to eat or wash up. he's driving now and we need fuel( oh thank god i can get some hot food.... no.. fuel for the truck)he shows me how to use the fuel card , fill the tanks etc. etc. we go inside see the casheir for the recipt. He tells me to grab a snack (it’s going to be a long day....wtf) i run over to the hot meals to go, ugh grease soaked god knows what, i pass; grab a water and a few hostess apple pies. Ok I’m driving again and now after 5 hours i gotta GO, follow me, I GOTTO GO. we stop on an of ramp and he points to the urine filled bucket and tells me to have at it, e'f you buddy, i grab the tp and squat beside the right side drive wheels. ( nice huh, this is my new carreer, god please kill me) i get back in the truck and he tells me to hit the bunk, he needs me to drive all night so we can make our second pick up and deliver on Sunday morning. (Wtf). i crawl in to this( Gary Colman) coffin and call my student driver manger , she tells me i have 3 options 1 stick it out. 2 be put up into hotel till another trainer becomes available (about 6 weeks) 3 quit, mmmmm that’s sounding real good.
So the rig is Rollin and I’m trying to sleep ten feet off the ground, being tossed around like a sack of potoes. (Yeah real funny) (Are you all keeping time of how much sleep I’m getting, i hope so) so it comes time for me to drive on another maybe 1 hour sleep. I go the 490 some odd miles through the night make the deliver and decide to quit right then and there. Called the student driver manager, tell my trainer. Lucky for me there was a bus station a mile away, called the wife got the bus ticket. Now the driver tells me he can’t leave me till i get on the bus. (I’m really looking forward to death at this point) now i have to wait till midnight for my bus a 7 hour wait in this nightmare of a truck. I realize at this time that my man parts feel like a breakfast sausage and two boiled eggs slathered in lard. Finally its 11 pm and i tell my trainer it’s been nice and i think I’m not cut out for this type of work i shake his hand and wish him well.
He does not leave till he sees me get on the bus. I get my ticket and wait patiently outside in the 20deg weather, I board the bus find a seat that looks somewhat comfy (no there not) as the bus pulls out onto I-81 north I realize that I smell, smell real bad almost as bad as the inside of the truck I just made my escape from (is there no getting away from this) 18 hours on the bus and 5 transfers and not much more than 4 hours of sleep in 4 days. I got back into Boston 4.30 am this morning. I’m glad that ordeal is over, looking at other companies already.
THAT’S MY STORY AND IM STICKING TO IT.

1-yes i did know about the long hours
2-yes i did know i would miss a few meals.
3-yes i did know i would miss a few showers
4-was i wrong. ------ well if i was shame on me. maybe my new career choice was a bad idea after all.
5- flame away, i can take it, (trust me on that)
    thanks for letting me rant.

For what it's worth;no one should go through that kind of experence" to have a job! to be in a inclosed" area with that kind of..."sorry-pig of a excuse of a human...is not" the price to be paid/endured, to be in this industry. No decent" human being could/should put up with that! That clown" is a part" of what's wrong in this industry! Scum" like that; give Driver's a bad" name! Good luck" hope you find better.

I'm pretty sure it's against the law to be in the top bunk while the truck is moving. Even if it's not, you wouldn't catch me up there while some guy I don't know is driving. If your accounts are true and accurate, that guy is crap, and he shouldn't have a job. At the very least he should not be training. What type of role model is that? If I were you I would have gone with option 2: "Get me off this disgusting truck and put me with a responsible, reasonable human being. The hotel's on you, right?"

Toward the end you say you're "looking at other companies already". You are a better man than I, I would've been out of that truck at the first sight of a 5 gallon bucket full of human excrement.

Green Machine - I don't know what company you worked for, but I can tell you that there are better starter companies out there for you. You will find bad trainers/mentors at every company, but some companies do their best to weed out the bad ones. I work for Swift, and have nothing but good things to say about them so far.
No human being should have to go through the things you just experienced, and that is NOT the way that most companies want their drivers to live. Put the bad experience behind you, and find another company to work for.

OH FOR HEAVEN SAKES STOP YOUR WHINING, Green Machine! OK, was that the type of flame you were expecting? Forget it, I put it in only in jest.

I know your situation is not one to be made light of, but hell, ya gotta laugh at something. . .

OK, sounds like you drew a "real winner" there for a "trainer." Hope it doesn't throw you out of the business completely. But let's face it, there are a lot of folks "training" who should not be. Hell, there are some "trainers" who are barely out of "training" themselves! It shouldn't be that way, but it is.

Hopefully, your next job will be a better experience. Under most circumstances, I would say you should stick with your assigned trainer, if at all possible. In your case however, I can see that it wasn't possible. Nobody should have to put up with that.

So figure that you had "A ADVENTURE," and just move on from there.

Good luck on your next job.

Look for another starter company. They are not all like that. Good luck.

Whatever company that was (probably a blue truck... like someone else said), they can't have any idea of the conditions in this bozo's truck! No company should allow this to continue! As soon as you told your driver manager what was happening, she should have pulled you out of there and FIRED that trainer! I would not have even gotten INTO that truck. I would have had someone at the terminal come look inside and nip the whole problem in the bud right away. Disgusting.

    venne Thanks this.

Sometimes I think some of the trainers have a boot camp mentality for the green horns. Sorry you had to experience that.
