Sup guys? This may be written in code since I'm so freaking cool, I joke.
So... my dad's been trucking in the USA for 20-25 years... he says he hates it but it's the only quality job he can get.. -_- na mean?
Anyways, he always told me go to school, get an education ... he didn't want me to end up like him.
But here I am, 21 soon to be 22 years old with 1 year of college... I am not a fan of it. I feel if I decide to drop out and get my CDL my dad will feel like I'm a failure. I may feel like it too.
But ever since I was little I was in a truck with him once it was so cool! Just today I drove him to work and got in the driver seat and saw the big ### wheel, the huge almost monster like thing I was inside of just ready to plow through people. (lmao) It was wild. It would be very hard to learn to shift gears I think, I've never done that. Is that the worst part of driving?
Man.... I don't know this seems legit because of the fact I'd be making 40 cents a mile starting out... I don't care if I'm gone 3 weeks at a time, no gf, nothing important here... The thing is the future, what if I do get a girl, n then we want to settle down... and I'll be gone EVEN a week at a time... the fact my dad was gone really ruined me as a kid, truth.
I don't want to make the same mistakes he did, but ### #### this seems like a great opportunity. I mean... 150-200-250-300 dollars a day isn't unreachable, am I right? (With a couple years of experience)
Son of trucker. My Concerns... (This may be my career)

Stay in college kid. As a college grad. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING. Hell, stay in just to play with all the horny hotties. That was the best time of my life! I loved every minute of it. I went to a year of grad. School just because I was loving all the access to "good times"
Maybe your different than me but I had a blast. Even if you don't use it be a kid have some fun and learn something! I mean if you can't hack it you just can't but give yourself a chance at a normal life......because being a modern day nomad just isn't what you think. LISTEN TO DADDY! -
Been there, done that. I got a 2-year computer degree and hated the job I've been doing for the last 10 years.
But I agree with Texan007, stay in college and finish it first. It is never as easy to get back into college later, so do it, enjoy it and take some time finding your career. Even if you don't use your degree it looks good on paper (much better than college drop-out) and nothing is stopping you from jumping in a truck later.
From what I've read on this forum don't expect to make the kind of money the recruiters like to promise you - you can make good money if you run your butt off or you climb the experience ladder for a good carrier, but it isn't the easy money that people on the outside believe it is.
Just my 2-cents. -
Stay in school, it is a great feeling to graduate. I had a slow start as well but it will pick up once you find your crowd. If you can work through school you can do anything.

I want money though!
CDL school is a month tops, I could be a driver by mid year. Making decent money. Plus I do NOT want to live at my parents house anymore..
If I stay here, I'll get a job making maybe 10-14$ /hr thats turruble. I won't be able to move out on that salary, and I'll have to live with parents. I'm in the IT industry and I doubt I'll enjoy that type of work as well.
Driving... well driving is fun, especially a ####### SEMI. I'm an adventurer, sleeping in a truck won't bother me, I'd get a top notch gaming lap top to play video games while I'm on break with that 60$ /month internet... I really think it would be a dream come true IF I can learn to drive those trains.
I've never shifted gears... how hard is it to learn, srs. -
Stay in school, get the education, and have fun. From what I've seen in my quest for a job I haven't seen anyone offering new drivers without experience .40 per mile. What I've seen is as low as .26 to .30 starting out. And running 2000 to 2500 miles a week. If you look around on this site you'll even see guys running less than they were told. You best source of information is going to be from your Dad. And like you said, someday you will meet someone and want a family and your Dad being going ruined you. You're only 21 and have a lot of time in front of you take you time enjoy school, and enjoy life. And like J Man "Just my 2 cents"

I disagree, YouTube "college scam". I personally have a 4 year double degree in mathematics and secondary education. I needed student teaching to learn I f#*^#^ hate teenagers. Unless your going to get a meaningful degree I would say no.
rjones56 Thanks this. -

The way I see it, if you want to drive, dont listen to the people telling you to stay in school. They have good intentions, but if you dont want to school, dont go. There are enough broke##### in school who are just there because high school teachers tell them they have to.
My best advice to you is to follow the link in my signature and read up on local jobs. You are young, take advantage of that.
Where do you live and what is your driving record like?Last edited by a moderator: Jan 25, 2012
