Any hints at how I can increase my chances of a job offer to drive reefers for Roehl?
I'm a student driver starting driving school at a community college on Monday, 28 Nov. I'll graduate 23 Dec.
I have a clean background - no criminal history.
Only one ticket in the past 5 years. Speeding on my motorcycle - 85 in a 70 zone issued 26 Dec 2008. I'm told that it should "drop off" by 26 Dec this year.
No accidents ever.
I've passed the Tanker, Doubles and Triples, and Hazmat endorsement tests in addition to all of the standard CDL permit tests. Hoping the Hazmat background check will be complete by the time I graduate.
If so, I'll have a CDL with Tanker, Doubles and Triples and Hazmat endorsements at graduation.
My passport is being renewed now and I should have a current passport in hand by graduation.
Only credentials that I know of that I'll be lacking is a TWIC and FAST. TWIC should be easy after Hazmat background check is completed/reported and Hazmat endorsement granted. I'll have to travel a couple hours from my home to get a TWIC card, or I would have already applied. But I found out that the background checks are the same for both TWIC and Hazmat, so I'm waiting for the Hazmat to come back so I can same a little time/money on the TWIC.
I have submitted an application via the Roehl website and have forwarded an Affidavit of Self-employment/Unemployment, along with a copy of my DD214 (to prove veteran status) and resume.
What more can I do/provide to them to increase my chances of an offer from them?

nothin...they will probably call you after the holiday weekend....if they don't you should be able to call the 800 number on the website...I know they called me dang near the next day after I applied
The Gryphon, DrtyDiesel and Meltom Thank this. -
yeah, same here. They called me the day after I applied. Got a pre-hire two days after that
The Gryphon Thanks this. -
Called me the next day. I also had my CDL with all endorsments and also a Vet.
I start training in Marshfield WI on Dec 12. I will be in th Flatbed fleet.
Good luck to ya. -
Just sent in my CDL training application. I have my CDL out of Florida but have not driven in 10 years commericially so I need to get the rust off. I am looking to start if accepted in late January, I have to clear up matters hear at home before I can start.
I think I am going to fly to Wisconsin from Florida, what are some of your experiences for traveling to Marshfield? I can get a flight up for $150, much cheaper than driving my Chevy truck all that way. Just seems to be the cheaper way to go. -
I drove from Jax...you can fly...but you will need to rent a car for a couple weeks...make sure you bring money for food and other expenses...and WARM clothes...its really really cold in Wisconsin in January...(sub zeros, and single digits)...there is a fleet farm not too far from the terminal so you can get carharrt and gloves if you can't find them in florida
-
Yep, not anything else you can do...wait for the call, give them a few days and as someone said give a follow up call.
Get your $$$ in order so when you leave things will be in place.
Home finances taken care of...
Don't go with no money.
You won't be making much once hired to start.
I really think one of the biggest reasons new drivers fail in trucking is not having a cash reserve at hand to get started driving. -
Mic - Thanks for the info. Cold weather not an issue for my blood, I hunt & fish on some land I own in Northern Canada. I know that Wisconsin can be harsh in January. When you say I will need to rent a car is that because of the need for transportation to and from the hotel to class everyday. I figure if that is the case cab fair would be cheaper than having a rental car sit all day while I am either in class or on the road in a tractor. What is your advise for $$ amount for food? Thanks!
-
They don't have a cab company here in marshfield..(not that I have seen anyway, it is rural wisconsin after all...you could try too get a ride from another student too...) you can get by pretty cheap if you buy food from the grocery store next to the hotel also the hotel has breakfeast, ur supposed to pay for it but I had friends that never bought the coupon and ate for breakfeast for free...plus there is a Walmart down the street...you will have a fridge and microwave...I got by with a 250 dollar food budget for 3 weeks...I even ate out a couple times too...(I ate lots of soup, Cereal, and spagetti Os.)...its all on personal preference....
You won't be in class on the weekends btw...(its personal preference if you want to show up and do pretrips and backing...) -
Radio Cab should still be there in Marshfield. Personally I wouldn't ride in any of them.
Roehl is a great choice, you'll like it there. Nothing more you'll need to do to get hired, sounds like you have your ducks in a row. Share some of knowledge during class, just don't make the instructors feel dumb, nobody likes that. Keep us updated on your experience. If you happen to meet Bob P. (not likely that you will) tell him the Wisconsin Hillbilly says high. The Gryphon Thanks this.
