I put my app in with Roehl They told me that I would be doing the Honor program , but I looked at the VA benifites and it was only 262.00 more a month , The way I took it they will give you a salary and then you get GI money too , I was in the reserves, now it would be more if you were active enlistment for three years then it might be worth it , I should know something tomarrow(monday) If I get accepted or not but I'm going to tell them no honor program, If I figured it right 2800 miles would be about .29 first six months that includes my GI money,but that is just my figures and my research

I am active duty and getting ready to retire. I too have looked into a few companies that offer the VA Apprenticship programs and Roehl's Honor Program blows them all away. The money alone is almost too good to pass up. Here is what it boils down to for me:

VA Benefits (Chapter 30)
1st 6 months: $913.75 (913.75 x 6 = 5,482.50)
2nd 6 months: $698.75 (698.75 x 6 = 4,192.50)
Total 1st year earnings from VA Benefits: $9,675.00

Roehl's Honor Program Pay Scale
Training Pay $870.00 for 6 weeks (3 bi-weekly payments) $870.00 x 3 = $2,610.00
Grade 1 (1.5-6mo): $1,410.00 (1410.00 x 11.5 = 16,215.00)
Grade 2 (6-12mo): $1,490.00 (1490 x 12 = 17,880.00)
Total 1st year earnings from Roehl: $36,705.00

Total combined 1st year earnings: $9,675.00 + $36,705.00 = $46,380.00


VA Benefits (Chapter 30)
2nd year $483.75mo: (483.75 x 12 = $5,805.00)
Total 2nd year earnings from VA Benefits: $5,805.00

Roehl's Honor Program Pay Scale
Grade 3 (12-18mo) $1,590.00 (1590.00 x 12 = 19,080.00)
Grade 4 (18-24mo) $1,690.00 (1690.00 x 12 = 20,280.00)
Total 2nd year earnings from Roehl: $39,360.00

Total combined 2nd year earnings: $45,165.00

The above numbers are based on me being active duty and eligible for the Chapter 30 VA Benefits and signed onto Roehl's National Van Division. Upon completion of the program, I would move to the cpm pay scale of a driver with 2 years experience 0.38. You'll notice that the annual income goes down by $1,215.00 the 2nd year because the VA benefits drop drastically.

All in all though, it's not a bad deal IF YOU DO NOT plan on using your G.I. Bill for anything else.

Hopefully my post has or will help some of my fellow VETS out there that are considering the program. Also, at the completion of the program you will receive a Department of Labor Jouneymans certificate. Roehl also told me that those VETS that are enrolled in the Honor Program and choose to do so, will be sent to a Driver Trainer school to become a certified trainer.

I trained a guy a few months ago who was doing the honor program. I then ran into him in Marshfield a couple of weeks ago. He said it was working out well for him. He does northeast regional so being paid salary is really to his advantage out there with all that traffic. Doing regional though means he is home every weekend but only for about 36 hours.

I just got accepted into the honor program and so far everything seems fine. It seems they have one dedicated recruiter to handle just hon. prog. applicants and he is great to work with. Very helpful, answers all questions, and he's very clear and specific about the benefits and salary. I start RDTC on May 21st. I was accepted into the 7/7 van fleet no problem. He made sure to let me know, though, that for the first 4-6 weeks after you're on your own you have to do 7/4/7/3 and then move to 7/7. Something about getting enough solo experience under your belt before you go a week between driving. That's no problem for me though. It actually shows they're thinking about safety for their new drivers. I also sent in my VA benefit application yesterday so I will try to report on when I ever see that money(I hate gov't backlogs!). I am very pleased with this company and I haven't even started yet! Looking forward to good things.

i started this thread a while back to try and get a better understanding of the program by way of getting a Driver's perpective, hwich has come by secondary word of mouth thank you for the input.

I was accepted into the program and am on my first weekend on the RDTC couse and enjoying myself emensy.

Day one is: welcome and orientation to the course and contact with the truck my intructors name is Tim great older guy with experience to boot.

Day two: long day of getting to do right turn in the training yard sharing the truck between three driver because one instructor had a Medical Emergency

Day three: intro to left turns and first day out on the county roads

Day four: another day on country roads getting used to spacing and timing and lots of shifting exercises.

day five straight line backing and backing a trailer to using a 45 set up

every day as two chapters of home work nothing to complicated just read through and answer the simple questions nothing tricky or difficult.

first saturday is all range work on what you feel you need to work on very social very relaxed (i spent 7 hours just trying to perfect my backing skills very nice not needing to share the truck)

now it is my weekend and i am relaxing...


just a tip if you are coming to class find some way of exercising the clutch leg because it gets very used gorw that strength

Not to dispute what you have stated, and I'm sure it depends on what you do(van,curtain,flatbed) and where(Regional/National). I asked about SE Regional and Dry Van. Recruiter(Carrie) told me average was 2100-2400 miles at .28 cpm to start/.30 for National.(7 to 10 days out with 36hour reset). I am going to do the Honor/Apprentice program myself, I'm not sure if it'll be worth it or not, but it's nice to know if I don't get my miles, I'll still get paid. Even though you leave yourself open to driving more miles than you're getting paid for($870.00 every 2 weeks). I don't know if that info will help or not. I start training June 18th in Wisconsin.

i am a navy vet. been out since last july. still kinda wondering if i still qualify for the honor program or not. and another quick question. after the evo's and everything, do you get your own truck, or do you have to share it when u come in on your 3 and 4 days off?
