After picking up my load in Laredo I drove until I was north of San Antonio and stopped for the night. Once my 10 hour break was over I headed for Dallas. Although the load was supposed to deliver in IL my final stop for it was in Dallas. I arrived at the yard and went through the safety lane. I dropped the trailer on the yard and took the bills to the dispatch window. Amazingly, I was not given any grief whatsoever when I handed to the bills to the dispatcher (this was the same dispatcher that recently gave TLeaHeart and Smokr problems for the same thing).

The reason for taking the load to Dallas instead of continuing on is that I have decided to end my employment with Stevens Transport. The primary reasons for this decision had to do with my family and finances. Staying out for five plus weeks at a time and only making .26-.28 cents per mile was not working for my family or for my bank account. Later this month I will be starting with another company that has a terminal close to my home, will get me home more often, and will be starting me at a higher rate of pay than what I was earning with Stevens.

Contrary to some horror stories I have heard, Stevens was very professional when it came to ending my employment. Once I notified my DM that I wanted quit he wanted to know why. I told him my reasons and he was very understanding. My DM placed a hold on my truck which had it routed back to Dallas. I found this out when I called someone other than my DM in Dallas who confirmed my status. While waiting to load in Laredo my counselor called me and also asked why. She was also understanding.

The process of turning in the truck was painless. It merely consisted of cleaning it out and turning in the keys to the shop office. I was given the credit for my meatlock ($90). I also had an exit interview with my counselor which lasted 15-20 minutes. Most of that time was spent filling out a form which rated the company and if there was anything I would change at Stevens if given the chance.

Stevens was kind enough to let me stay at the hotel last night (I made sure not to turn in the keys to the truck until this morning) and provide me with transportation to the airport which saved me a nice chunk of money.

Overall, I really can't complain about my experience with Stevens. I had my frustrations every now and then but I think that would go with any company. They lived up to their end of the bargain.

I am thankful for the friends I have made at Stevens and the experiences we shared. In the coming weeks I will post the new company I am working for and start a thread chronicling my adventures there.

I don't know how you guys can take it at Stevens. I got a friend there now. They mess with experienced guys more than newbies. He's going out with a trainer for 3 weeks, he asked why and they told him you have to learn the Stevens way to drive. Then he told me any time off after 7 days you have to go back out with a trainer. Then you have no guaranteed home time? Do they do something special that the rest of us know nothing about?

I quit Stevens during their orientation you know how it is going to be from the git go.They don't want experienced because it costs more.

I don't know why you guys hang around this thread pissing and moaning about what you THINK you know or what you may have heard.
Lets face it...Stevens is a training company. If you have years of experience, why would you want to go to Stevens?
But if you have little or no experience, Stevens is a good company. They have an excellent training program that takes the TIME to train you properly. They have good equipment and plenty of freight.
Do they have problems? Sure! But show me one company that doesn't.
People work for training companies to get a start, then move on, often for more money. But they wouldn't have likely gotten that second job without the training they got from Stevens.
Some training companies run people thru like water in a seive. Stevens takes time to train properly, and if the student completes the program, will be a well trained new driver with about 40,000 miles under his/her belt. If they complete the first year, they have somewhere between 100-125,000 miles and those are miles where they have had their hand held, butt spanked, but know more than most one year drivers. That's because Stevens takes training and safety seriously.
You want to be a super trucker? Go somewhere else.
You want to get the best newbie training on the road? Stevens is one of those companies that will provide it.
I have many years of experience in this industry, but because I took a couple years off and 'retired', I had to start over...with a training company. I picked Stevens for a variety of reasons and have stayed here because they treat me good, I don't worry about broken down equipment, I get good miles and loads...I like it.
I could go elsewhere, but maybe I'm just too tired to start again. I'm comfortable.
Stevens pays me according to my experience now.
I can earnestly recommend Stevens for a driver starting out that wants to take his career seriously. I don't know of a company that will do a better job training.
Will he/she likely be here two years later?
    No.
But where ever they have gone, that new company will have a well trained and safe driver.
