Person killed in wrong-way crash on Hwy 26 near Beaverton

BEAVERTON, Ore. - A person was killed early Saturday after driving a pickup the wrong way on Highway 26 near Beaverton and crashing into a semi.
Beaverton police did not immediately identify the driver pending notification of next of kin.
According to police, the person was driving a black 1993 Nissan pickup east on Highway 26 about 2:30 a.m. when it suddenly turned around near Southwest Cedar Hills Boulevard and started heading west in the eastbound lanes.
The pickup struck a semi-tractor pulling two Fred Meyer company trailers in the center lane nearly head-on. The pickup's driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene while the driver of the semi was not injured, police said.
The impact of the crash punctured a diesel fuel tank on the semi, causing it to burst into flames, police said.
All eastbound lanes of Highway 26 were closed for more than five hours while state transportation crews removed the damaged vehicles and put sand in the road to soak up the spilled diesel fuel, police said.
Officials are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
