Just thought I would post a few pictures of the Freightliners at the plant near my house that are powered by CNG (Compressed Natural Gas).
Those big square boxes behind the cab are the CNG tanks.

I first thought those trucks had big batteries till a friend of mine who works there told me those were CNG tanks behind the cab.
They have hired alot of people back to this plant after moving the production back from Mexico where they alot of problems with drug gangs and shootings at the plant in Mexico. Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Penske and other large customers have told them they did not want their trucks made in Mexico too.SHC Thanks this. -
I have seen a few ordered for Foodliner sitting at the dealership in Dubuque, IA. They had the tanks covered and were painted red.
Nice to hear they are using the plant near you, again.Last edited: Sep 30, 2011

I drive intermodal for SNI. We're going to receive two of these by the end of the year in the Los Angeles market.

Wonder what the CNG fuel cost per mile will be for these?
We can buy CNG for around $1.80 per gallon that is different than buying a gallon of diesel. -
Are these running just on Natual gas? because diesels engines will only run on a mix of CNG and diesel, to the best of my knowledge. Would love to know the engine there are running?

The engines used in these trucks have spark plugs. They are a modified diesel engine that has an ignition module on them. They run ok. They have to variations on the tanks. No mixing, just straight CNG and LNG. You can get longer mileage out of the LNG than you can the CNG.

You can get the truck powered by either LNG or CNG. -
on our market MAN, Mercedes and Cummins (ISLG) offer CNG engines. The problem is that CNG tanks are heavy and you loose about a ton of load capacity with 6 ore 8 CNG tanks pack and you have to fill tanks every 200-300 miles. CNG tank filling gets nonger time and there are many CNG filling stations in Lugansk but anyway you need to plan about 1/2-hour to fill up.
The other dangerouse thing that CNG pressure is over 250 BAR and tank filling is really dangerouse, becouse of tank is bad ore damaget it may blow like a pound of C4! So tanks must be inspected every 3 mounth here.
Anyway explosions happen. This summer not far from my home truck was ruined with tank explosion. Owner installed additional tanks under frame and one was bad. year later he got this truck destroyed.
last year bad CNG tank killed car driver.
LPG is not so dangerouse, less dangerouse then gas. But it is not so cheap like CNG. -
Do it also runs on Diesel. Because here you can use the Diesel tank when the gas tanks are empty.
