Cat bearing replacement

You mean what the parts will cost ya or a full job?

I did bearings on my 3406E and i think just the rods and mains ran me around $200, plus new oil pan gasket and a buncha other miscelenious crap was around $300 for parts, if you have a shop do it add another $500 to that.

 

Depending on how many miles are on it, I would do all rods and mains while you have the pan down. Cat does weird stuff like wanting to regrind one lobe of your crank or cam. See what all is damaged. Chances are you will need an over sized bearing.

 

I would put some Lucas in it if your going to push it. I would figure 2-3 thousand.

 

Are you sure it's a bottom end knock? You may have a rocker arm broke. When was the last time you ran the rack?

 

Rocker arm wouldnt cause it to knock, just shake and vibrate bad, depends i guess.

Last i heard labor for a full main and rod bearing job was $500 at a CAT shop, i could be wrong, i doubt you will be paying 2 grand.

If its knocking already then oil pressure will be low and fluctuate, when you get a knock its usually the rod bearing going bad, main bearings usually dont wear as fast do to less stress being on them compared to a rod bearing. If its knocking bad i wouldnt drive it, trust me my old man learned it the hard way.
