Advice for a new driver please.

I am in Denver, Colorado and I just got my CDL class A license. I have zero experience other than at the school. I would love to find a local job here in Denver, Colorado. The reason for that is I am raising my two small kids by myself and going over the road would be hard. I have family that can help but I really hope someone out there knows of a local company here in Denver that hires drivers without experience.

It will be hard to get a local spot with no experience. And if you do, it would low pay. But try local dump truck, pop service or work docks and work your way up

 

@Chinatown will probably be your best option to ask. Dude is a virtual encyclopedia of trucking companies

 

Miller, US Foods, Pepsi etc. All will hire you on as a trainee, local routes. Finding local work is easy if you don't mind physical labor throwing cases.

 

Indeed and craigslist are a great starting place. Apply to everyone, including LTL terminals.

 

Is there an Old Dominion terminal in or near Denver? This is a great company and hires new cdl grads for linehaul and P&D.

Trimac Transportation has a terminal in Greely for local work. Make about $60K and they hire new cdl grads. I believe that's a dry bulk terminal, so you will need tanker endorsement. With Trimac it's best to walk in and ask for an application and interview; that's what they prefer.

Also, if you graduated from Sage, check Dairy Farmers of America in Greely.

 

Siegel Oil Co., at 1380 Zuni St., has local delivery trucks. Also try Colorado Petroleum Products Co. at 5590 High St.

Look into the Beverage or Food Service companies. They both hire new guys, they both pay descent (Food Service pays REAL well) and you'll be home every night. You'll also get a great set of abs out of the deal. It's ball bustin work but their upfront about it and pay you well for it. I went to beverage (beer) right out of school. Don't get that "can't go local when your new" stuff get in your head, FAR from true. People do it everyday. The bigger foodservice companies like Sysco and US Foods are Union so you'll get higher pay, OT after 8hrs and start building a retirement from day one, also cheap and many times FREE healthcare, can't beat it. I'm strongly considering going back to that stuff for the money and benefits. I've got a job and a company I really like now, but the money and benes just aren't there. Not a bad way to make a living until your body craps out in you. I can only speak to the beverage side but I've watched enough foodservice guys do their thing to know what I'd be getting into.
