Should I get a J1708 cable and give it a try?

Understood thanks. Here's my set up. At 250$ it was a gamble really if it did work. Going to play around with it some more tonight. Could be the cheaper J 1939 cable I bought but I am going to sift through some files and see if I didn't install something right or wrong.

chenese adapter is made cheaper than genue one
they use USB power supply and RS232 cabel

and no optronic link from J1708 chip to MAX232

That's why it is so cheap

    Volvo8873 Thanks this.

Now that you post that in the directions I was sent with this it showed a similar diagram with directions. I will look into that and report back.

really i never used this one chenese adapter
but I know that they did not fit 5v dc voltage converter inside it to power up chips and they use USB power. so be sure USB cabel is OK, not only RS232

I don't realize that the USB needed to be hooked up also. I will give it a try. Here is the diagram I was talking about. Doesn't make sense... image.jpeg
