"60 minutes" did a story back in the 70's about a guy who lived in N.Y. and went to "work" 5 days a week panhandling. Dressed down for about 5 hours a day, made like $300 a week cash. Not bad back then. I'd say these beggars are about 50/50, legit and not legit. I once gave 2 beggars a ten dollar bill after tearing it in half, giving each one a half, so they would have to go together somewhere to tape it back together and then buy some food. This was probably the only time I've ever given a bum money. These two guys were definitely hurting for a handout.
You look them straight in the eye and say " I can't do anything for you have a good day " then keep on going !
That, and the "which way you heading?" crowd. I just get this bewildered look on my face and tell them, "Straight to Hell!". I must pull it off pretty well, because they never ask me to take them along with me.
At shipper one day, their scale costs $5. I only had tens and twenties. I walked to the truck next to me and asked if they had two fives for a ten. The wife of the driver gave me that line, "we don't carry cash". They drove for a bottom feeder company. I glanced at the logo then looked back and said, "ya, only because you don't have any.f" Least that is what I wish I was quick enough to say.... Mikeeee
how did she look? not that it matters but for her to speak for the both of them, and to know that you were another driver, well never mind-
Had a few. Recently in Chicago wanted to sell me perfume or men's cologne. I kindley cracked my window and said no thanks. Remember! Always be kind. I've heard story's about people getting tires slashed, air hoses cut, ect ect. Don't be that guy. Be polite they'll move on down the line.
