Getting started

Would love to obtain a cdl and then transport tankers. I am leaning toward non-haz. I have reviewed several milk co-op job ads to get a feel for their hiring requirements, and they want a bit of experience in addition to the license. Would a Jr college/tech school program be better than private driving school? I think I will have to pay for it either way -- private school seems faster route to getting a CDL but college programs give more training time.

 

Tech/college programs are usually accredited and most companies hire graduates from those schools.
Where are you in North Carolina?
Lots of tanker work in NC for new cdl school grads.
Some tanker outfits have a list of schools they hire from and some just want a 160 hr. minimum school.

 

CDL school is ONLY about passing the state CDL test. You learn everything while in training at your first company

 

If you can stick around for the one at college I would go that route. More wheel time is far better than a quick school.
I went with a trade school that had a 4 week training course. There was not enough wheel time in my opinion. The school fudged the numbers. Students are supposed to get 27 hours wheel time and the school was running students 45 minutes and rounding the time to hours. Thankfully I was able to get my full wheel time (complained) while other students were willing to accept a shortened time of 21-1/4 hours.
