15 speed grinding between lo range to hi range. Everything I have found points to the synchros going bad,
This grinding just started yesterday. How long will my tranny last, I would like to drive home and have shop there do the work. 1500 miles.
I have loads booked from where I am, Denver to home.
I know its a gamble. Just wondering how much of a gamble. I don't want to get under a load and not be able to deliver.
Better to run empty. OR Get fixed here in Denver. IF the synchro go completely will I still be able to drive in low range.
I know the best answer is get it fixed now.
    Thanks

If its only grinding using the split just dont use the split until you get home.

Grinding is between lo range and hi range. It would be a long ride in lo range.

Does it do it everytime, or just on occasion?

Is has done it all 4 times I needed to shift yesterday.
Sitting today. While sitting with full air. I can shift the range button up and down and hear the pin smack in trans. That seems ok.
Shifting in and out of gears is smooth, no grinding.

I'm pretty sure trans in big trucks don't have synchros. That's why double clutching and rev-matching is required.

Mine does it on occasion for over a year now, 1.6mil on it.
Maybe I'll get it rebuilt next year, no rush.

display.jpg that's a synchro. Located in the auxiliary section of the transmission on the main shaft

Is it only for shifting between low and high range? Does it synchronize the aux with the main trans? I'm obviously no mechanic and I'm curious. Thnx

Eaton’s powertrain technologies are used by many commercial truck original equipment manufacturers (OEM) globally and include:

    • Synchronized manual transmissions (5 through 13 speeds)
    • Constant mesh manual transmissions (5 through 18 speeds)
