Could someone explain in detail how this works? If I drive from point A to point B in lets say 8 straight hr, do I stay at point B for 10 hr before driving again? How does gaining hr work? Do you take 34 hr reset every 70 hrs? what is the difference between off duty and sleeper berth? do I do 10 hrs off duty or on sleeper berth? Just want to understand this better.
Once u go on duty!! U hv a 14 hr clock. That starts!! In that 14 hrs u can drive 11 hrs!! Thats it!! Once your 14 is up!! U must take a 10 hr break!! Or once you drive 11 hrs your done .& u must take a 10 hr break.. During the day with in the first 8 hrs u must take a 30 min break off duty..( dot) requirement .. Ok thats your 14!! Next u hv a 70 hr clock to start your wk!! After your 7 th day of working if i still hv some tym left on your 70 u start getting hrs back that ubran during the wk.. This is called a rolling log.. So u can run like this also for a bit.. But if i can get a 34 restart in take it.. Hope this helps!!! Remember get in the habnit @ allways ask questions over & over again!! Be safe driver!!
2. You could stop for 10 hours even though you still have 3 hours available to drive. This of course will reset you back to 11 hours available after the break, provided you have the hours remaining on your 70. Once you start moving your day has begun and you have a 14 hour window to drive your 11 hours. 4. No a 34 hour restart is not required. You could in theory drive 8.75 hours every day for the rest of your life and never bump your 70. The 34 hour resets your available driving hours to 70. 5. off duty means you are relieved from all work related duties and are not near the truck, like if you park the truck and go home. 6. for your 10 hour break you will go to sleeper berth for your break. I logged off duty for a decade while taking breaks before a DOT officer pointed out that I was wrong. No ticket just showed me the regulation and no employer had ever uttered a word about it. As for 3 I will let someone else explain that. It is very simple but my answer will leave you more confused
1. I'll try. 2. You could stay at point B or continue on to point C by driving another 3 hours so long as you're within your 14 hour window and have satisfied the 30 minute break requirement. 3. You can work 70 hours in a rolling 8 day period. (or 60 in 7 days if the company doesn't operate 7 days a week). There's really no such thing as gaining, it's just that the each day the 1st day of the 8 day period moves and the hours from what was the first day yesterday are no longer part of the 8 days that are included. 4. No. You can start a reset as early as 168 hours after your last reset started. 5. One is in the sleeper berth, the other is not. 6. Whatever you prefer. I think most do a combination of off duty and sleeper berth unless they're at home or in a hotel/motel.
where is this regulation? I have never heard this and have logged off duty for years (mainly because I keep forgetting to change the elog to sleeper berth).
I will dig it out when I get back to my truck on Monday. I continued to log off duty for some time after this and still do out of pure habit most of the time. This was in Montana and the guy had a paper clip on the page and the reg highlighted. As if he was used to pointing this out.
Or you could start you day and drive 5 straight hrs , take a 2 hr break (off or sleeper) drive 5 more and take a 8 hr break ( sleeper only) I like that method for some reason, but it can mess you up. Lol Anyone hear something about the reset being changed so that it dont have to show 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. twice in a row. I cant remember where I read it but it said it was in congress waiting to be passed . sorry not to change the subject...
Its in there. They can get you for falsifying logs so to speak because you are in the sleeper berth and not out of the truck. Gotta love it. I think its one of those "technicality" kinda deals
