i need to secure cargo that is sand boxes on a step deck. There are 2 boxes each filled with 20,000 pounds of sand. Looking at the WLL chart I think I would need 2 tie downs each box with 5/16 chain and 5/16 binders. 2 binders per box, 2 20 foot chains per box. Would that be correct?
Almost, but not quite. The WLL on 5/16 chain is 4700 lbs. If you have 3/8 chain the WLL is 6600 lbs. If you only have 5/16, to achieve the correct WLL of half the weight you would need an additional chain per box.
I know few companies that have the container style locks on their steps. PropX by any chance? Noticed they have 2 smaller ones. We pulling Arrow's up boxes around in the Marcellus. They're starting to dominate the market up here. Sandbox and Hali are a joke with how they conduct business and their rates are nothing special I saw a guy yesterday with 2 chains a box. Wasn't close enough to tell if they were 5/16 or 3/8. At least if you over secure it the customer knows your being safe and willing to go the little extra to provide a good service.
Is this a one time haul? Why doesnt the stepdeck have container locks? There's no way you're dropping loaded boxes on site and having to unchain them.
