Would you be leary of purchasing a high mileage truck (around 1 million miles)? There seems to be a lot of trucks in this mileage range and affordable. Or would you be rebuilding the motor right away?

    Thanks

Bought one at 960,000 miles. Up on a million now. Paid $12,500. Oil samples are not indicating an inframe any time soon.

    If I had bought it and inframed it immediately - 12.5 + 15 = $27.5k - I don't know. Whatever you're comfortable with.

. I would get a oil sample done before buying it and if possible a dyno. But the high milage wouldn't stop me from buying it. Just make sure it's been taken care of.

Thanks for the information. I am trying to get into it and not be in debt up to my eyes.
Figured oil samples would be good to go.
I am hoping to get 1.3 to 1.5 million before rebuilding.

It would be a good idea to have a mechanic inspect any truck before you buy it. The motor isn't your only concern, trans, rears, radiator.

I've been in my truck since 890k. Bought it with 994k and now has over 1.2 million. Its been fantastic mechanically.

I feel I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time with how I got mine. I have read about others who are doing everything from inframes to complete platnum rebuilds before the 1 million mark.

Mine was a 435hp motor. I turned it up to 500 hp back in December. I was hesitant due to the miles,.. and it seems to be running better than ever.

Get a history,.. look for repetitive problems, get oil samples done, take it for a test drive and go from there. I wouldnt rebuild a motor just based on its mileage.

I did the bottom end on mine because I was concerned about the mileage because someone else here got me to thinking about it. When I had the work done, mechanic showed me the bearings,.. there was nothing wrong with them. He said they could have went another 500k easily.

Hold off doing the inframe, too include rebuilding your differentials & transmission. (is it the autoshift) Higher mileage, be vigilant with filter & oil changes.

There are peripheral issues that can be addressed: Crankshaft balancer, belt pulleys & tensioners. Each of those can go before the inframe.

Issues to keep an eye on: turbo, air compressor.

Inspect everything that you can. Get oil samples, Put it on a dyno. Get as much history as possible. If all of these come back good, buy it, run it and put as much money back as you can.

Mine had 650K on a CAT reman engine, unknown mileage on trans.

At 825k a snap ring on the main shaft in transmission broke, replaced with reman.

A week later I had it in the shop for an annual inspection and other maint. While running the overhead they found bad injector lobe on the cam. While installing new cam they found several intake valves that were sunk into the valve seats so far that they could not get proper valve lash.

It is now getting a platinum inframe.

Truck ran fine and I was hoping to get another couple years out of it.

My advise is to do as much pre purchase drive train inspection as you can and pay attention to the overall condition of the truck. It will tell a story. However it is still a gamble.

    Good Luck!
