I lived outside in the cold for two winters and here's what I learned:

its not the socks themselves so much as what happens when the socks get wet from sweat, and yes we sweat even in winter

you can do normal socks and change them a couple of times a day. I keep some wool blended with synthetic for when its crazy cold like -20

clean dry socks are your friend in winter

also, clean clothes in general are warmer, something to do with dirt getting in the pores or something

I was always told that the pointed toes were to make it easier to fit your boot toe into the stirrups.

Wearing a 11 EEEEE myself, cowboy boots that will fit me are almost nonexistent. Hiking boots size 12 EEEE are sometimes wide enough.

Usually, yes, but two thin cotton socks won't match a single thick wool sock.

A thin cotton under sock and a nice thick wool sock on top of that is the sort of arrangement you want.

Layers are where it's at. I wouldn't recommend those thick wool ones unless you're really gonna be outside.

    Keeping dry is the key.

I live in northern Minnesota and I am outside a lot.

I swear by the Smart Wool brand of socks. They are light weight and warm and last forever.

I also have the big ole green, wool Army socks if I’m out for extended periods and have my pack boots on. These are way to heavy and hot for driving tho.

I can get both kinds at Fleet Farm.

Heh. I suspect those -148 rated footwear items were designed for Antarctic operations or extreme mountain climbing. Pretty sure it gets close to that cold on Everest and in the inland parts of Antarctica during the dark season.
