We’ve got a 2001 Peterbilt 379 that has slow to engage/weak feeling service brakes. The problem has been getting slowly worse for 6 months or so. When you are driving along and hit the brakes you get nothing at first then they come on all of a sudden. Even then they don’t feel as strong as they should.

The problem started about 6 months ago and “fixed” itself (or so it seemed) for a month or 2. Recently we have noticed it’s doing it again and possibly even getting worse.

There’s no air leaks, the brake shoes and drums were replaced about 2 years ago and still have ~75% left on the shoes. One slack was replaced and the S cams and bushings are all good.

I’ve been reading a lot of air brake diagnostic info which pointed me to the service brake relay valve. I changed that as well as the ABS solenoids which didn’t fix the issue.

Some diagrams that I read say it could possibly be the parking brake control valve? But the parking breaks release smoothly and quickly. I talked with the shop that does the major work on our trucks. I am leaning towards a worn out foot brake. The shop says they doubt it but obviously without looking at it they can’t be sure. The truck is going into the shop in a week or 2 for an unrelated issue and they will check out the brake system but for my own curiosity I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

First thing I'd do after verifying proper brake adjustment and free movement of the cams is plumb a gauge in at each brake chamber and see if you're getting the proper application pressure at each wheel.

I would agree with looking into the treddle valve as suspect if all of the foundation brakes are in order. More importantly check the plunger under the boot at the pedal mount. Older trucks these get all gummed up and corroded and some plain sieze right up. Be aware if its bad under there you may end up replacing it all before you are done depending on the level of corrosion, bolt breaking ect.......

If it were mine, get all the parts ahead of time. Worse that happens is you return some if you dont need em all.

Mine was doing that, then it would stick with brakes applied, till I stabbed it hard, to release them. Especially in cold weather. I sprayed it real good with Pb blaster. I’m told you can remove the plunger and clean, or replace it. I couldn’t figure out how to do it. Mines been working good, but still a little grabby. I’m going to just replace the whole foot valve, before winter. I hear it makes braking very smooth. Like new.

With the treadle being so critical to controlling the brakes, I'd toss the entire assembly, pedal and all, in the trash if it is what is causing the issue.
