They had already looked at either digging out the road and/or raising the bridge. Both solutions were cost prohibitive.
Do they mark the detour? I mean if they get right up to it, which way are they supposed to turn without hitting something else or getting stuck?
The only place I can understand a driver hitting a bridge is NYC they have incorrect clearances posted on the bridges you kinda have to look at it and guess if you can make it. Some 11ft marked clearances can be passed with a regular otr truck and some 13ft passes are actually 13ft then you hear the SCRAPE and the can of sardines opening. Anywhere else where they actually determine the ACTUAL clearance height and make sure to post signs before the street and right before the overpass then that is the driver’s fault.
But the cab made it right? I wonder if he bobtailed under there, thought he was okay, then came back with the trailer.
Reminded me of something that happened in my hometown. In my town there’s this road actually called “railroad road” and there’s a low 12ft bridge along it. Anywho a local driver (straight box truck) has always went under there loaded for years. Then one day a customer made a request to return something and he went under it empty. SCRAAAPE got jammed in there good. Luckily all he had to do was lower the tire pressure and didn’t need the tow.
I seem to remember some videos show truckers who realize they aren't gonna make it. They usually turn left, but I don't know if it's marked.
Just before the bridge there are over height sensors which are triggered that activate the LED sign which clearly state: “OVERHEIGHT VEHICLE MUST TURN” It doesn’t matter which direction you turn (left or right) but you definitely do not want to continue straight, unless you want to become camera fodder for the 11foot 8 website!!
The videos posted online clearly show it as an 11'-8" clearance. They also must have a clearance height sensor that triggers the flashing lights when a vehicle approaches over height. Yes, there is an arrow pointing to the left if over height.
On that note, there's a flat bedder in one of the compilation videos that at least heeded the flashing lights alerting him not to continue, however, he knocked over the stop sign pole on his turn, which I guess is a lot better than the alternative
