13 speed ticking noise, only in 4th, 8th and 8th over?

The top plate won't even come off without pulling it. The fact it's in high gear position only says it's in the front of the trans

 

Can’t find anyone around here who will tear it open for me to rebuild it. Going to have to pull some money out of my ### for a new one I guess.

A good gear shop will go thru them for 22 to 2500.00 parts and labor unless they are hurt really bad and need lots of gears.

If it's just a bearing kit, high low synchronizer and a slide collar or two it's really not bad.

 

Normally a clicking sound is a chipped tooth on a gear or a gear tooth broke clean off. Been there done that !!

 

A lot of these big transmissions have 2 or 3 large magnets in the bottom of the case. If you lost a tooth or 2 there's a good chance the magnets got them, rather than the tiny one on the drain plug.

 

I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that let alone the down time of me drinking beer and scratching my head figuring out where the #### that extra bolt came from. I’ve been rebuilding engines since I was 12, but transmissions are my kryptonite.

 

Think a bad clutch bearing could make this sound? That crossed my mind since 4th is closest to the input, and possibly when it’s in high gear the sound is transmitted through the shaft clearer than any other gear? The release bearing seemed loose to me when I was greasing it, but it could just be me on high alert.

 

Typically the release bearing will make more noise under load (when you step on the pedal) than just spinning under no load.

 

The shop drove it, and looked it over. Said they would just run it until it gets worse. The sound goes away when you push the clutch in. Not sure if that narrows it down. Guess I’ll beat on it some more until something happens.

 

She’s getting worse especially under load. Broken tooth? I’m going to have to get it torn apart. I can’t trust it’ll stay together.
