You don't seem to understand the ZTE Mobley device. If you get one of the hotspot devices you linked to, you will pay $50/month for 5 GB data. While the Mobley is used as a hotspot device, it does not use the hotspot plans. It has it's own plan: $20/month for unlimited data.

The Mobley was originally designed to be used my mechanics to troubleshoot vehicles with the OBDII port in the vehicle and the plan was $40/month. That's why the device was limited to 8 minutes or so before it shut itself off. Within the past year or so, ZTE upgraded the Mobley to do away with the 8 minute limit and make it where the device stays on all of the time.

There is so much abuse to this plan, I believe ATT will make the Mobley users get a hotspot plan or increase the Connect Car plan back to the original $40 or perhaps even higher.

In short, the $20 unlimited plan is why you specifically want the ZTE Mobley. No other AT&T device is eligible for that plan.

Right, I just finished reading the DSLR thread. Thanks.
Sorry, it looks like that might be a discontinued(due to extreme interest) item.

The mobley has no diagnostic capability, never did, it is and has always been just a hotspot for cars, trucks and RV's.

Correct. In my haste to explain it, i mis-stated the capabilities of the device. It was only used to send info from the vehicle to other computers. Users figured out how to take advantage of that and it has resulted in the Mobley craze.

I got mine off the at&t website and paid outright $99.00 for no contract. Got it in one day with free shipping. It came already activated and I got the 12v adapter off eBay which took longer to ship. I've been using the heck outta of it and have had no slow downs. At peak times if I'm in a metro area from 16:00-18:00 I notice a little throttling but not much. I sure wish I knew about this when it came out a few years ago!

It can't even do that, it is literally just a hotspot that plugs into the obd port. It can't track vehicles, send locations or anything. Its just an hotspot, literally compared to other obd devices it is the least capable as its literal only function is hotspot but it does it well.

I went to their website and was able to get to the point of entering the IMEI for the device(when ordering the mobile connect unlimited for 20). Try activating online, yes, I've heard it's a hassle, but 20 p/mo for unlimited is kind of woth it. This was me trying to activate as a new customer.

For anyone having trouble activation call 866-595-1222. It's their car connect hotline, tell them you want a 'Standalone Connected Car' plan. I talked to at least 8 different people who had no idea what I was talking about, and assured me I had received bad information. I also talked to several different people in the car connect department before I got lucky and found someone who knew what I was talking about. Might be best to call a couple different times to get someone who knows what you're talking about. Best of luck to ya!!
