I have a CDL (PTX, for a number of years thank you) - and know that it is illegal, by the same agency that makes us put all this crap on in the first place - to remove emissions equipment from a motor that comes with it from the factory. Big Talk from someone who doesn't know who I am, or WHAT I KNOW...

Same applies to removing catalytic converters from a car. I believe it's a $50K fine to the SHOP - and even the small performance shop that did my last corvette engine work - handed me my catalytics to "gut", as it was ILLEGAL FOR THEM TO DO SO.

http://www.mycarlady.com/2010/09/17/epa-fines-dpf-delete-users/ - applied equally to Heavy Trucks

40 CFR Part 86 is where this is found.

Now, I'm not saying that no one DOES IT (as risky as it is), nor am I advocating for or against it (ya'll do what y'all want to do) - I'm just relating that doing so is in violation of federal law, and the shops that do it have greater potential penalties than the owner that has it.

Does it get done (with a wink and a nod) - sure it does, all the time. Do you have any (warranty) recourse with the manufacturer after modification - nope, none (and you know if you go out and throw a rod or something totally unrelated to the DFP-Delete, they will BLAME IT ON the DPF-Delete ANYWAY). Do people get CAUGHT and penalized for doing it - probably not very often (outside of Kalifornia). With EPA 2012, will they be possibly looking at this MORE in the future - I (personally) think so - as we all know, the gubberment cares NOTHING for clean air, but LOVES THE REVENUE STREAM that MORE REGULATION PROVIDES - both in compliance AND PENALTIES.

I don't have a horse in this race - don't care whether anyone does a DPF delete or not - I was merely seeking to inform. I've done emissions mods on most of my vehicles (out of warranty), and really don't mess with them (in warranty).

A option for you is to look at the Bully Dog Big rig tuner as well. My understanding is there is no footprint to trace. I would talk to someone that actually has one, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

Why dont you inform us and why you at it read your warranty real good mods dont have to have anything to do with what you take it in for for them to void you warranty and once its voided it will go into the system so no matter what you do afterwards or where you take it no more warranty. Now you have spent $100K for a truck with a warranty that useless and as far as gaining 2mpg from 4 to 6 a 50% increase (from hitting the delete button) ok but you can block it or remove it at a high cost but it wouldnt pass a dot inspection when they check under the hood and see that all the emmission equipment has been removed $$$$ you cant shut it off from the computer because all it will do is reset it self they designed it that way and no bulldog and pittsburg system wont shut it off dont think they want the federal government putting them out of business for bulding systems that bypass or shut down government mandaited emmission systems. and warranty does matter go out and count how many trucks with 500K (that when most warranties run out) that has not been in the shop

PS 10 Years turning wrenches on these things before becoming a truck driver helps a little

The magnuss moss warranty act prevents any engine/truck manufacturer from a blanket void of a warranty. So you would be 100% incorrect that they can blanket void the warranty for non related mods. If this was the case then they would have to provide everything from engine oil to air filters FREE OF CHARGE.

You sir are completely clueless. You have no idea what your talking about. You should do yourself a favor and just forget this thread even exists because by posting idiotic stuff like you know it "can't be done" is laughable!

This next sentence will completely discredit you. You were a "mechanic" for 10yrs.......and the superior knowledge of all things mechanical made you buy a Volvo!

My ability to research and gather information about what is actually happening TODAY and not 6-years ago made me buy a Volvo with a Volvo motor.

Don't discredit yourself by just spewing the lines from uneducated trolls.

MMWA would keep them from not covering rearends or an alternator but they could make a case for injectors, turbo, etc.

They would need to make a case that the modifications caused the failure, or you would need to make the case that a modification didn't cause the failure. In either case they couldn't deny warranty for unrelated components, which is what Plumcrazy suggested they would do.

"real good mods dont have to have anything to do with what you take it in for for them to void you warranty" from Plumcrazy.

I completely agree BBB, a ECM modification would probably void allot, but it wouldn't void lets say a failed block unless caused by the mod. He suggested that everything would be void, which is not the case. It's been tried and proven time & again that after market parts & mods will not blanket void a warranty.

Good luck with it, and better luck getting rid of it. I would love to know i was at the mercy of the dealer for everything. I can get parts and service for all my trucks everywhere.

What's hilarious about all these warranty nazis is the only parts that actually need/use the warranty is the exact parts you remove!!!!!!!

    Agreed.

The MAIN POINT is, that while you're finding an attorney to sue under MMWA - you still have to fix your truck - or let it sit.

The opinion of most "experts" would hold that: removing emissions control equipment from a motor designed FOR EC equipment - and having to modify ECM programming for the lack of that equipment - any subsequent motor failures in turbo, heads, exhaust, etc. - the manufacturers could likely make a better case that the removal of the EC gear was directly related to the failure, then someone could at proving it was NOT.

As far as "licensed repair facilities" that would actually DO this mod: Johnnys Truck Repair might - Palm Peterbilt would NOT.

The aftermarket exhaust on my Harley is in violation of EPA Regs (and some jagoff cop here was referring loud exhausts to the US Attorney here, much to the chagrin of everyone that rides AND said US Attorney). Can HD not cover my leaky radiator because of the exhaust, head work, cams & throttle body mods on my bike? No, than can not (and did not). But I paid for the broken valve spring - because I did head work.

Again, I'm not advocating for EC devices. Fact is, we're stuck with them. Fact is, I plan on buying a truck that still has warranty on it, and I would NOT do a DPF/EGR delete for both the warranty exposure AND the possible legal sanctions for doing so.

    So again.

FACT: EGR/DPF deletes ARE ILLEGAL under federal law and many state(s) laws and can subject you to both fines and potential OOS.

FACT: EGR/DPF deletes will void warranties for failures that CAN BE DIRECTLY RELATED to the modification (and not trannys, diffs, radiators, A/C's, or anything like that), which exposes you to potentially large expenses if you suck a valve, throw a rod, crack a head, spin a turbo, etc. And when it comes time to do the repair (and I'm not saying it will ever come to that) - it's up to YOU to prove that it was NOT the fault of the mod - if you want to get your truck out of the shop for FREE.
