Isn't $66k a little too much for this?

Even if the truck didn’t have any problems at all. It’s now in the mileage that you’re gonna start seeing problems happen. This is why they’re are upgrading. As long as you’re OK with that. The first 400 or relatively problem free. The next 400 you’ll have problems. At 700,000 you’ll be replacing a lot. Go Navy!

    UPDATE:
I am going to buy this truck. I travelled half-way across the US this past week to look at the truck. I took 5 hours to inspect it and a road test.

The upper rear timing cover gasket had a oil leak. All D13s get this leak starting around 350K.
There was a small coolant leak that I though was coming from the thermostat housing, but was from an clamp that needed tightening. Coolant was slowly leaking. The mechanic had his coolant pressure tester on the truck when I talked to him...to make sure there were no other leaks.

The company is fixing both of these items before I make payment. In fact, they had it in their shop an hour after I finished my road test and inspection. The following morning the mechanic was 90% complete with the repairs, all but buttoning-cleaning up things.

The seller company owns a mid-size fleet of Volvo VNL860s and has their own maintenance/repair shop. The only thing they don't do in-house is on-the-road emergency repairs and Volvo recall work. I have every PM and repair record/invoice that was done on the truck. I reviewed all the PM/repair invoices to make sure there was no major red-flags. There was nothing out of the ordinary. Every repair was for routine and usual items that anyone would have on a truck with 466k miles. All PMs completed before the Volvo recommended mileage. Overall I am satisfied the truck has been well maintained. Even the DPF has been cleaned and transmission fluid/filter changed before recommendations per Volvo.

I spent a couple days at this company talking to the seller and their service manager and even the mechanics. These folks really understand the value of proper maintenance and seem to take pride in their work.

Prior to me travelling to see the truck I called two Volvo dealers, service managers, that are local to the selling company to get a report of any Volvo warranty work done on the truck. There was none. HMM, What? No work done by Volvo? Not even warranty work?

Both say, "Yeah, this company does their own work. You won't find a better maintained fleet. They only bring trucks to us to work on for recalls and if there is some super-specialty repair that they can't do".

I had one of these same dealers call me back 5 mins after I hung up just to mention that piece of info when I questioned why no noted repairs done thru Volvo. I guess they put two and two together when I starting asking specific questions on the truck repair history. That gives me quite a bit of peace of mind.

    @Short Fuse EOD
The truck will not be put back into fleet or OTR service. It will be used for local and regional hauling, so not a ton of miles will be put in it in the foreseeable future. Yep, I am well aware of why fleets sell/trade trucks ~500K miles...out of warranty and afterwards is when many thousands of dollars out of pocket repair expenses may occur. From a fleet perspective, it makes good business sense. This truck has 13 months 35K miles of Volvo warranty remaining. I really doubt that I will put 35k miles on this truck in a year. Hence the remaining warranty also gives me peace of mind.

One of the main reasons I was interested in this truck is the VERY low engine hours, 9045, and EXTEREMLY low idle hours, 5% per menu screen which equals 452 idle hours). FYI guys, this is a prime example of how an APU can benefit your rig. Save the engine idle time and overall engine hours. Excessive idling is murder on engines. Preaching to the choir...

IMO, at that is all it is...my opinion, this truck is fairly priced for the miles, hours, condition and market value. If, you are asking if I am paying to much? Well, that is like asking "how long is a piece of string". I will expand...

I have looked at several other trucks of similar specs, condition and mileage. This is the fourth truck I have personally inspected, in detail in my effort to find a good used truck. I can get a truck with the same specs and miles for ~$5-7K or so less but that truck will have 15-18k engine hours and 60% idle time and no (or sketchy) PM/repair history. Since I have only been focusing on VNL860s to purchase, I can tell you the asking prices are all over the place with ~$20k swing in price from lowest to highest.

Thanks for all of your input. Have a great day.

You don't have to justify it to us. It's your truck. Have fun!

I just found this thread but I wish I had sooner. Not that i would be trying to talk you out of it, actually the opposite. That's a great price on a great truck especially because of the APU and low idle hours. In Sept I bought a 2021 860 with 499k on it. Of course a lot of them are right there on mileage because the warranty is out. I purchased a Volvo extended warranty and had the selling dealer qualify the warranty. It included pulling samples, history, clean DPF and replace a couple of sensors, etc. Fortunately for me this was the same dealer who had done some of the warranty work. I wanted a highly spec'd truck and this is a Globetrotter XL with lots of bells and whistles and it isn't white so for me it was a good deal.

I paid $72k for the truck and $9500 for the 250k warranty. The truck has been solid for the last 30k. It also had some inactive codes. I had my mechanic go over it and had the rear diff oils changed, iShift oil/filter change and carefully checked out king pins, etc. So far all I've had to do to the truck was replace the two rearmost airbags. Oh, I forgot, I did do front rotors and pads immediately. That's about the only thing the seller was lay on. I had heat check cracks in the front rotors and pads were barely legal.

I would recommend getting the OTR regen/code clearing software. It isn't cheap but neither are emissions problems or tows.

This is the second time I've bought a Volvo at the end of it's warranty. My 2015 780 ran great with impeccable oil samples til 1.1 million when I sold it.

I'm loving the newer VNL. Keep us posted on your journey.

T680 is even cheaper and smaller sleeper. KW doesn't offer a bigger T680 sleeper comparable to a 860 Volvo and the Paccar is terrible with the X15 but far behind it in terms of longevity.

This VNL860 can be Volvo certified prior to 500K and you can add a plan 2 including emissions VOLVO warranty for the next two years, 250,000 mi for only $10K
