40 pins always seemed to white smoke more than 70 pins when cold. If you have the probe, I would calibrate the timing being the whole gear train has been apart. Some steering gearboxes have a bleed screw on them.

If it's an earlier 5ek the Cam sensor needs to have a spacer under it or else the cam will hit the sensor and that can cause issues. If you called Cat with the serial they would know.

I believe newer ones required two shims.

Thanks for all the help! Tackling power steering first this morning before the miss, drained fluid from the reservoir, replaced the filter inside, opened the bleed bolt on the gear, only fluid but no air comes out, fluid is cycling inside the reservoir, hooked up a pressure gauge to the compucheck fitting in the pressure line but registering no pressure? Is there a valve that sticks in the steering gear? Gear was new 100k ago, trw reman.

Also jacked front end of truck completely in the air, I can turn the wheels left and right more easily by hand than the steering wheel turns.... I know I’m missing something here but I’m at a loss. I don’t know how a pump can move fluid but none goes to the gear. Worked fine before we took it off to overhaul the engine, and confirmed via Freightliner and photos I took before removal that it is installed and hooked up correctly, can’t really swap the lines to the wrong ports because they are different size threads

A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE for your knowledge and advice! I bought the timing calibration probe and cable, went through the calibration procedure and INSTANTLY smoothed right out. NO MORE MISS! Fuel pressure was a little low as well, new regulator plunger fixed that. Power steering pump was stuck in bypass mode, plunger was stuck in it as well. New one will be here tomorrow and I'll be ready to load this truck full and break 'er in!
