Modern, electronically controlled engines sense the need for more torque and apply their own throttle as you let off the clutch.

To prove my point with particularly skeptical students that the accelerator is not necessary to take off, I would take the truck from 3rd gear to 10th gear and never touch the
accelerator. Always proved the point and got the desired reaction from the student.

In 15 or 18 I dont even use the deep reduction, If your driving heavy haul, or actual grades most drivers never see, thats a whole different ball game.

At some point you'll look up and realize you've been doing the thing so long you don't know how you do it you just do. You'll have to sit there and think about it to explain to someone. It becomes second nature and "muscle memory" plays a big part in it.

Ramblin is right....close anyway, with a big truck you don't use any fuel till the clutch is all the way out. Second gear provides all the torque you almost ever need to pull out even on a major grade....trick to starting out without a rollback is this... barely apply the brakes just hard enough to keep from rolling back no harder. Begin to ease up on the clutch till you just feel the truck start to pull Hold clutch there don't let out any more. ..take foot of break truck starts rolling forward. Let clutch out all the way. Ease fuel on and your rolling.
It will take less than 10 times pulling out/off this way and you will be an "old pro"
I have 30 years driver trainer 10 as cdl instructor. Never had a student that couldn't catch on using this method. -R
