Welp, I put in my notice today at Amazon. Last day there will be August 1st.

HOPEFULLY my orientation at Abilene will be a couple weeks later. My goal is to start my truck driving career sometime around August 15th. When I called Rusty last week, he told me to wait a few weeks before actually putting in my application since my anticipated start date is still a month and a half away. So I figure I'll probably apply online around the 18th to get the ball rolling.

When it comes to jobs, I'm a firm believer in the First Rule of Wingwalking: Never leave hold of what you got until you got ahold of something else. I am breaking that rule this go around, because I have already made arrangements to keep my kids for 2.5 weeks, from July 28th to August 13th. I don't have enough vacation with Amazon to cover that time, and I wanted to quit on the 1st anyways because Amazon's health insurance will continue to cover me until August 31st whether I quit on the 1st or the 30th. So why not quit on the 1st?

Still, I'm nervous. I'll be deliberately unemployed for two weeks, with the possibility of being unemployed for even longer if Abilene falls through for some reason.

Paschall Truck Lines has been getting themselves very well acquainted with my voicemail, because they insist on calling me when I'm at work and can't talk on the phone. They really really really want to set me up with an orientation date. So worst-case scenario, if I can't get on at Abilene for whatever reason, I'll sign up with PTL in order to avoid going more than two weeks without income.

But that is very much a worst-case scenario. Which is funny because three weeks ago they were my #1 choice. And now I would feel so very disappointed if I had to drive with them.

In other, unrelated news, I passed a local truck on the way home, one "Bermuda Trucking", from Chester, VA. White day cab with a red spoiler on the roof. He was hauling an ex-Abilene trailer. The livery had been removed/painted over, but you could tell it was originally an Abilene trailer. I'll take that as a good omen coming so soon after I put in my notice.
