To the best of my knowledge it's that way nationwide. Not for nothing, but board certified doctors earn more than those who are not board certified in their specialty. It's the same thing with teachers. Like it or not, we are highly trained professionals and we deserve to be fairly compensated for the work we do.Nobody goes into education to get rich.
Student results? LOL How about we start basing trucker pay on a preplanned, computer generated guesstimate. S0 instead of $ .39 a mile you are now getting $20 an hour. But it's not based on your actual drive time it's based on how long Google maps says the trip should take. So if there is inclement weather, construction, or an accident you are screwed. It's kind of the same thing.

Since you seem to have a reasonable amount of knowledge about the feild, and since I'm planning on going to school to be a teacher, I had a few questions.
1. Student teaching- Do the student teachers ever get a chance to teach, or is it all grunt work and paper grading?
2. Do I have to apply for a student teaching position, or will I be assigned?
3. Finally, after school and looking for a position - What states are reccommended as far as avoiding the whole "creationism vs. evolution" debate, other than my homestate of PA? I ask cause I'm gonna be a history teacher, not a science teacher, and I just don't want to deal with this issue. -
RickG said: ↑Interesting comments . Things must differ by region . My children were in special ed classes in the 80's . Only one needed to be . I pulled the other 2 out , helped them a little myself and their grades improved . They had been in special ed not because of a learning deficiency but a teaching deficiency . Don't try to debate it . It was obvious . Several teachers were nothing but slackers .Click to expand...I am so sorry your children had to experience that! Unfortunately, there are bad teachers and bad schools; and good children suffer because of it. There is no excuse.RickG said: ↑I knew who the good teachers were and they were a minority.Click to expand...
I wish there were some systemic change, an overhaul, so that never happens again. NCLB has just made things worse in my opinion.
Schools get more state and federal funding for each special education student. So children who may be C/D students sometimes get 'classified' as special needs and put into a special class. That way the school gets more money. BUT the test scores for the special classes go up because there are kids there who don't belong. Is that right? No! Do I condone that? No! Unfortunately there is a lot of politics that goes on in education.
That's what happens when politicians and the public demand that students test better. It becomes all about the test.

LOL You will teach, you have to; because your advisor will randomly pop in to check on you and make sure the school is holding up their end of the bargain as well. Uhm, real teaching is grunt work and paper grading.1. Student teaching- Do the student teachers ever get a chance to teach, or is it all grunt work and paper grading?Click to expand...
You will be randomly assigned. They don't want you to go to a school where you have an 'in' with the staff.2. Do I have to apply for a student teaching position, or will I be assigned?Click to expand...
LOL avoid the southeast and the bible belt portions of the mid-west. Also avoid Colorado and Utah. The state sets the curriculum, however sometimes the school district adapts it without permission. I'd try to get hold of a text book or two before signing on, if possible.3. Thanks, CountryAngel. I'm hoping to land a position in OH (YAY outta PA!!). I know about the grunt work and paper grading, and I'm prepared for it. What I'm looking forward to is the lecture portion. What can I say, I'm needy and require being the center of attention. And unfortunately, my life isn't screwed up enough to be a stand-up comedian.
A friend of mine taught biology briefly in Arkansas or Missouri, or one of those religous states. She lost her job over the "creationism vs. evolution" thing, since she refused to teach just creationism. Personally, I'm a history type, and hope to never have to deal with this. -
http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/05/16/rhode.island.teachers.rehired/index.html?hpt=T2(CNN) -- A Rhode Island high school that fired all its teachers in February has reached a tentative agreement with the school's teachers union to rehire them, the union announced Sunday.
The school board of the Central Falls School District, outside Providence, had voted to fire 93 staff members from its high school -- including teachers, administrators and other personnel -- over low student performance.
The deal between the union and the school district allows teachers to return to work for the 2010-2011 school year without having to reapply for their jobs, though the union said Sunday that "teachers will need to recommit to their jobs and interview with the new principal."
The agreement, which must still be ratified by teachers, includes measures to improve student achievement, including a longer school day, targeted professional development for teachers and more after-school tutoring, the statement from the Central Falls Teachers Union said.
The school district and union have been working with a mediator since March.
"There has always been agreement on these points: that we all want what is best for our students, and that significant changes are needed at Central Falls High School," teachers union president Jane Sessums said in the statement. "Working together, we and the district have arrived at a solid, forward-looking agreement that provides support for our students and the tools our teachers need to help them succeed."Click to expand...
