And remember that walking that 3/4 mile will help lower your blood pressure, increase your physical fitness, and get you in the habit of exercise a bit. Our society looks down on exercise but our chosen profession makes us sedentary for 11 or so hours a day, so getting into the habit of walking is a good idea.

The weight gain started when I bought a small cafe and ate most of my meals there. Though not fast food, it was high calorie and lot of carbs and the pounds started creeping back on.
The question is, how do you eat healthy when you're on the road for weeks at a time. I don't see how you can avoid eating fast food and less than healthy food from truck stops. I think I read somewhere in these posts about the Crowder course that there is a segment on healthy living, so I'm looking forward to what they have to say on that subject.
Actually, I do like to walk and in the last few weeks I have been walking 2 miles a day (at night because it's too hot to walk during the day here in Vegas) so I'm hoping that will help with the BP and maybe I can drop a few pounds too. -
Some ideas:
**Do not add salt. To anything. Period.
**If you need 'crunch,' eat a carrot.
**Look for green, leafy veggies. The greener the better.
**Drink water. Lots of water. LOTS of water.
**The more water you drink, the less you will pee. Really. Your body needs water to function at its peak.
**Liquid is not the same as water. What your system removes when you urinate is not water; it's all the garbage added to all the sodas and energy drinks we drink. Drink water.
**Once your tongue gets used to not being deluged with sugar, water will taste good.
Finally, keep in mind that what we think of as being "hungry" is usually not. It's usually being thirsty.
I can drive 16 hours from my home in Western Michigan to my grandchildren in Oklahoma City without eating anything but an apple but ONLY if I have at least three liters of water. I usually make one stop at a rest area along the way and when I arrive, the water is gone and I'm ready to be tackled by grandkids. It takes some adjustment because our processed food diets have made our bodies crave processed sugar, but it can be done. You will be healthier for it. I plan to continue my habits when I get on the road, too.
Moderation in all things is good, so if you need something sweet, eat it! Just don't overdo it. You're not on a diet--it's a lifestyle. The Lifestyle of the Sedentary And Working!Starbuck, Truckernurse and briarhopper Thank this. -
when you stock up on food like at walmart get some salad honestly even if you put some ham on it or turkey its alot healthier than a bigmac or whopper. straight up stop drinking soda idk if you do just saying if anything drink apple juice atleast your getting nutrients. and when you do absolutely have to eat fast food get a grilled chicken wrap with no mayo and put a lighter sauce on it soda will kill you i can a day equates to about 14lbs a year let alone 42g of sugar what thats doing to you i drink soda all the time so i dont want to be looked at like a health freak but im running around all day and i kayak atleast 2 hrs a day since i recently quit smoking i need to distract my self

On a side note, I am now officially an Old Dawg. I hit the big FIVE-O Saturday morning. All alone in a TA in Prescott, Arkansas. Currently camped out at the Laredo terminal with only 10 hours left on my 70. Picked up no hours tonight and won't get any Sunday night either. So my dispatch will be a short one.

Update: Got the Crowder enrollment packet from Keturah at CWTL yesterday (Saturday) According to the paperwork they prefer for me to take the DOT physical in Joplin rather than here in Vegas unless NV requires me to have it done before I can get a permit. That is a Nevada requirement, so will be going for the physical tomorrow to get it out of the way and then take the knowledge test sometime before the end of the week and (hopefully) get my permit. Been studying the manual and although it is long and covers a lot of ground, it doesn't seem too hard so I am optimistic that I can pass it on the first go.... (famous last words) lol.
I've pretty much ruled out driving from Vegas due to the cost (couple nights in a motel and around 3 tanks of gas) and not wanting to take the time at the end of class to drive back home and then return on a bus or by flying... So, right now I am planning on using my frequent flier miles and fly out. So, that brings up a couple of questions to anyone who has attended Crowder:
1) Do incoming students usually go to Joplin first and 'check in' with CWTL or go straight to Neosho?
2) Does CWTL pickup the tab for the motel for Sunday night or is that on the student? I remember reading from a couple of people that they stayed at the Booneslick Lodge, but not sure if that was covered by Conway (just Sunday night - I know that from Monday on I stay in the dorms...
3) Anybody know what the weather's like in early October in Neosho? 70s? 60s? and 50s at night?
4) Anybody know if the skid pad is back in operation? Hope so.
Thanks! -
PM, Katey or Roadrealtor. Both of them got their CDL thru Crowder.
