So-so miles... Did 7600 in two weeks while out with finisher...good $$$. Since being out on my own my best week was 3200 miles and my worst was 1300 miles. I can't seem to string together a few good weeks in a row. Like I said though, there has always been a good reason why not. Don't read too much into, I admit I like to complain just a bit. Bad habit!!! It's going to get better. Overall, once I got over being homesick (that took about 7-10 days) it got easier. Before this I worked in Parts Departments of car dealers for 22 years. Last job was a manager at a little Chrysler dealer. I could barely get any time off and was not making much money. I had spoken to a recruiter at a driving school about 18 months before and he told me that eventually the light will go on and I will realize that I need to do something to better support my family. He was right and here I am. This does take some getting used to, but all in all it's not a hard way to make a living other than being gone from home.

what school? crowder or one in MI ?
I talked to conway recruiting today. very posotive laid back they saide to give them a call when i had things in place and wanted to begin.
I also talked to crowder collge and the woman was very nice and gave me better info as to whom to talk to at conway.

this is definately a big life change. want to get things all in a row. don't want to get out there and then get cast aside.

this process is both exciteing and scarry.

What is the turnover like at conway? why do most people quit?

I went to a school in MI. If I had it to do over again, I would take a long hard look at Crowder. As a newbie driver, part of our orientation was a week long "boot camp" at Crowder. The school is excellent as are the instructors. If you can get in at Con-way and are absolutely sure you really want to make the change, then do it. I did it and love it. Con-way takes exceptionally good care of their equipment. My first truck was a 2006 KW with over 600,000 on it. For a 5 year old truck it drove like nearly new in my opinion. The trailers are well cared for also. The one behind me right now is a 1999 model and everything works great. I don't have any knowledge on turnover at Con-way or why. I can't find any reasons why yet. If you do decide to go through with this you will also find that everything the recruiters says is absolutely true and there are no suprises. As far as getting cast aside, do your job well, take care of the equipment, treat the customers with the utmost respect, and be ontime for your appoitments and you should have nothing to worry about.

Suck up the expense and go with Crowder you will be much better prepared then most of us that comes in with some experience, I think the turn over anywhere not just here is lazy people think they are going to drive 2-300 miles a day, pull into the receiver have someone coje out open the doors on the trailer guide you into the dock and then tell you where the coffee and doughnuts are and fluff your pillow while they unload you, this isn't the life out here, I have been cussed at spit at flipped off and told to go away in not so nice of terms because the shippef or consignee didn't know I was coming or had a appointment, I have been treated the way I would treat others out here as well, I have jumped out and helped the tired guy into his sleeping spot and also been helped into my spot when I was having troubles getting into it, this is a give and take job, if you think you are not going to help anyone get to where they need to be then no one is going to help you, I enjoy helping a gvguy slide his tandems and then tell him I need to slide mine a few holes only to have him jump in his truck and take off after he got his done, I thought oh well he will get what he deserves. Be Safe. TD24

thanks mitrucker:biggrin_255:. so far every one from conway seams REALLY REALLY KOOL .
recruiting saide that when i get done they may still have a north east regional available. that would be good home time at least. thought i would have to wait years for something like that.

then again most people hate to run newengland. ( I may hate it also lol )
I understand not much moves out of here.

I got alot to think about and alot to do first D.O.T. physical, passport, permit, storge of my stuff. wow i need to get in gear.

Pick a school first and see what there procedure is for the DOT physical, I know mine had a specific clinic we had to go to. As far as the passport, first check to see if your state has what Michigan calls an enhanced drivers license. What that is is a license that acts kind of like a passport. I can enter Canada, Mexico, and a few other places by land or sea. it is cheaper than a passport also. I checked Google and VT does offer it. It was as simple as providing a birth certificate, my social security card, and my drivers license if I remember right. All of the requirments will be listed on their website. In MI it was $70 for my enhanced CDL. I think a passport runs about $125 or so. But like I said, pick the right school first and foremost!!!

Oh yeah, as far as New England goes, never been there, don't ever want to, heard bad stuff about it, but Con-way does offer bonus pay for it.

hi again, td24 you snuck in while i was posting. actually crowder will be cheaper. about half and that includes rm&board. conway will pick up the other half if i go to crowder. nothing if i stay local pluss would have to do boot camp after.

no one is going to fluff my pillow

hi mattp: call recruiting and ask. how many hours is the course? 160 is minimum for conway need to know paralell pking. chance is you will still do boot camp. ( not a bad thing I hear)

sorry my last post was interupted. I wonder if cr england fluffs pillows. LOL
the lady at the collge saide geting my own phys was fine. even if not I still want it done before I go. haven't had a reall phys in years. would hate to get there and lose money because something was up or it would be an easy fix.

Yes VT does have an enhanced licence but have to travel 2 hrs to get it and I can get passport local ( besides nice to have that added ID for emergencies) also works well for the I 9 form only need the one proof of id.
yes conway pays an extra 5cents for newengland. Is that because the miles are low. the roads suck or alot of people up this way are total Jack #####*$
what have you heard about newengland?
remember this is all new to me but am learning alot fast.
