Alrighty then terminology time Top dead Center refers to the very top of travel of a piston, be it a gas, diesel or steam engine. It is the uppermost travel of the piston in the bore. Since engines are not designed to slam into the head on each stroke. This is achieved by the length of the connecting rods. It is measured in degrees angle, since diesel engines fire with compression top dead center equates to the uppermost stroke of the piston for ignition of the oil/air mixture. Still referred to as Top Dead Center for timing the engine. Having a well times engine really helps when setting your Jake brake/ engine retarder system.

But hey what do I know the wife is the one with an engineering degree.

I personally never heard Top Dead Center used. Then again, I'm not a mechanic:biggrin_2555: Really

TDC is a term used on internal combustion engines before the timing was set on the 1st MODEL A FORD

Is it a Volvo hydraulic retarder? If it is it should be more powerful than Jake brakes and have a slightly high pitched whine when engaged.

So, two days into my driving career and I'm loving this automatic. It's just one less thing I have to worry about and it's such a smooth ride.
