Are Steel Toed Required

You might be better off just waiting until you get to orientation and they'll sell you a pair via payroll deduction.

 

I worked for a company that gave use a certain amount of money every year to spend on uniforms and/or work boots. You could always spend more out of your own pocket. I found I could easily buy uniforms one year and shoes the next year and always be sharp.

 

You never said where you are located (like a working zip code)....but Swift has a terminal in Oklahoma City:

You might inquire with either (or both) about CDL training & driving as a team....if you haven't already.

Having a company terminal near your residence will make life easier for you, during home time....especially as new(er) drivers.

If that's not a factor for you -- their network of terminals will come in handy later...when you guys need to shop for groceries, do laundry, stop for repairs/maintenance....&/or take a shower.

I have done the payroll deduct for boots a couple times, I dislike it cause where I work its always "buy this exact pair or nothing at all". Because of that I have "officially" worn Red wings and/or Danner's for the last 23 years, but really I just resell them online after the company makes me buy them and wear them for pole re-certification. I have always liked either Georgia or Thorogoood. Georgia lace up has always been my favorite up to yesterday. Lace up has been my regular boot type since the Marine Corps in the 90s but I tried on a pair of slip on Ariat's at Atwoods yesterday and it was almost a religious experience.

My current boots blew out last week so its time for another (eyeing some pull on Ariat's) and might as well get them now while i can afford it versus payroll deducting during training at a trucking company when my income is in that "broke like it ain't no joke" training pay phase.

Well, actually, I wore moccasins while actually driving, but if I got out, for any reason, I wore safety shoes. Like you said, it's not an office setting, and are subject to all kinds of hazards. I tell you, more than once I was glad I had safety shoes on, and today they don't have to be clunky army boots either.

 

They don't even have to be boots. Wal Mart sells steel toe shoes that look like high top tennis shoes. I've used them and they are very comfy. Fully compliant with OSHA regulations, as well.

 

See that doesn't even look like a steel toe shoe.

 

Maybe the tank side. Mainly do to plants picking up at and delivering to.
