Yeah, that's exactly what happened. That's how the Gold Rush got started. It's something odd about human nature. I think the emotional desire for status overrides the logic of keeping the gold secret.

I read a true story of a man who spent nearly his whole like digging for gold. Left his young family, convinced he would eventually strike it rich, he kept digging deeper and deeper into the mine. Till he died. It struck me as ironic in a way. Extreme example, yet not much different to what many, including myself sometimes do. Being focused, really obsessed with a project or goal. Not seeing the reality of the situation. Not wanting to fail.
