Balls to the wall and getting sick

I got off the truck and made my own way back to Jackson the moment they said I’m good. when I went through their training it was measured in days/weeks not drive time hours. They said I needed 6 weeks, I did 6 weeks… if you really need the job, I do not recommend doing what I did, ymmv.

Team “training” is pretty par the course at starter companies. I’m under the impression that it’s practically expected at kllm. During my upgrade, they even acknowledged that there are trainers who treat “students” as merely “steering wheel holders.” There are good trainers and even the “bad” ones can still be good by someone else’s standards. 6 weeks isn’t enough time to see everything, a good trainer would be someone you can talk to or mms for advice over the next few months.

This could be outdated, but I was told that trainers can’t kick trainees off trucks; my first one tried… they can certainly make your life hell enough to get off on your own. Who’s the company going to believe? A student with 2 weeks or a successful “trainer” of 8yrs? I got off 2 days later when we were near some of my family.

My second trainer started off much more promising; I didn’t like the way he rushed but I didn’t feel like I was operating unsafely like the first. We didn’t get along very well either, so as I mentioned earlier, I got off his truck as soon as I completed enough days to upgrade; I didn’t want to wait to get routed back to Jackson.

Keeping the trainer happy will probably get you a decent truck after upgrade. I’m somewhat speculating, I’m not privy to these details, it just makes logical sense. Why would a company give new or good trucks to a wildcard (ie me). I failed spectacularly and ended up with one the oldest and highest mileage trucks… which subsequently spent so much time in shop, that a mere 2 weeks later a local dispatcher, <3 Brad, gave me a brand new one; one I hurried off the yard with, never to return.

I was lucky; I don’t recommend doing what I did, you could very well have a different result. The consensus I’ve gathered is team “training” is normal and often sucks; it’s better to suck it up and just get through it. The only caveat is safety, if you feel you’re being asked to operate in an unsafe manner, then it could be prudent to take steps to resolve it and/or wait for a different trainer.

 

You are 100% wrong.
It's not the way training should be done.
And there are great carriers out there who are doing it the right way.
I would work for them and never for the bad ones.
Or not work in this business at all.
Common sense, anyone?

This renegade trainer needs to be brought to KLLM's attention when you give your input. You're being used as a sacrificial lamb to cushion this jerks pockets. Has to be a lease purchase or owner operator to control the truck like he's doing. Just don't let the "bullying" go but so far.

 

Hello and thank you for your input to my training. A new rule was implemented and sent out to all the trainers and drivers when I first started driving back on April 12th. Since we have been going nonstop balls to the wall, I have attained the hours needed. Yesterday, I drove into the night as usual(32 days in a row), and stopped at 2:30am. The trainer woke up, I told him where we were, and all was well. This morning, I woke up to another human being once more. He is not talking to me unless it is "training related". I asked him why. I asked him what I did wrong? He replied that he will answer training questions. This passive aggressive behavior, this up and down emotional rollercoaster has got to stop. I am assuming dispatch has told him I have met the 240 hours and I can go back. I texted my student rep a few days ago and she said she would let the dispatchers know about coming in on Monday the 16th. Apparently this has set him off once again. I'm thinking of just getting out of the truck at the next available chance and just getting my own transportation back to the main hub. Any thoughts?

 

Don't get off the truck just anywhere. Get permission from the student rep before getting your own transportation.
You could get a "abandoned load" ding on your DAC report.
