Chain or strap keep an old coat or sweatshirt around and tie it on the line when getting pulled and it will make it drop instead of fly if broken

    SAR Thanks this.

I know, and most dumptrucks have that written on the tailgate, but the dozer guy will still do it of you let him.

Synthetic rope is considered to be safer and is slowly becoming industry standard. The synthetic ropes we have on our winches are rated at 17,000lbs on the standard wreckers and 36,000lbs on the commercial wrecker. That is the winch lines on the wreckers. Tow straps are a little different but rope is almost always rated higher and safer than cable than chain.

Almost needed it again getting parked at an out of the way truck stop with craters and 6 inches of snow on the ground. The last bit of load is on the ### end of the trailer so I spun out. Had to rock and straighten out for about 3 minutes. Threw my chains down in front of the tires them gave 'er hell.

    Stuck... who gets stuck?

Lots over the years, most often completely unavoidable or even on purpose--chain up, drive until you get stuck and then a bed truck or dozer pulls you through. Over 130,000 lbs in the two cases below.

My preference, in order, is; synthetic cable, steel cable, strap, chain. I often carried all of the last three. Be careful with straps because you can add an element of "spring". If you know what you're doing you can use that to your advantage, if not, you get the results in the fourth picture...

Chains are always best, less chance of them snapping then straps or cables i remember watching that ice trucker episode one day one of the drivers had to pull another truck out instead of gently tightening the strap / chain they just keep jerking it which is a no no as when you have a load of around 80,000 lbs the strap is the weakest point and will of course snap.In this case they ripped the whole bull bar off the front of the truck. Obviously the weakest point! So the moral of the story is slowly slowly tighten the strain on the chain then pull. The best one i found that works is a big industrial winch it slowly pulls the vehicle out inch by inch but who has one of those handy when you need one?
