When would one know whether to do just an inframe or do the whole out of frame? I'm looking for a truck on the 20-30k range where it probably has at least 700k to 1.2 mil miles. Not sure if i should go too old because id be just as worried about the chassis and axles etc rusting out as i would with the engine.

Looking for the biggest bang for the buck with having a 12.7 detroit 60 as I'm pretty set on having that engine.

Any tips and advice would be great.

just my opinion, but do as little as possible and still make since. ie. if your going to take the head off, for blow by or blown head gasket, makes since to go ahead and put in six new piston kits, all the gaskets, everything that's going to be "inside" of engine. get a reman. head. and stop there. no turbo, water pump or injectors, because you can always put those on later , without takeing off the head. Im saying this because I don't like the idea of spending all my money in one place. Safer to spend some here and there. So if I get burned I don't get burned for the whole ball of wax.

I said on a remanned crate engine, not the truck. Each component of a truck has its own warranties. Transmissions, Diffs, engine. Instead of rebuilding the engine, just drop in a factory remanned crate engine and you have a 3 yr / 300,000 mile warranty on that engine. The truck could be 30 years old, it doesn't make any difference.

Whatever the dealer offers. One thing about a factory reman, the warranty is going to be honored everywhere. With a dealer done inflame..... who knows. Now, you could look at a place like Interstate Power Systems, which is a factory Detroit shop. They offer the complete Detroit warranties based on what level of engine inflame/rebuild you are doing.

I just paid 30 K to swap a remanufactured 500 HP 12.7 in, plus swap a 13 speed in for my 10 speed, new clutch, new ECM, radiator, A/C compressor, air compressor, starter, fuel lines, all hoses, etc, etc. Big bill, but a lot of confidence in the result.

    That's not so bad . Heck a new truck here where I live are $220,000 now , what's 30,000 .
Sounds like you got alot of stuff replaced or rebuilt. You'll be able too go for long time now with no worries.
