OK Wolf 98, I have been checking on quite a few companies myself. You can pretty much get some good info by checking out the websites of companies. What information you can't get on their websites, you can get on other websites such as Truckers Report. Personally, I have checked on Swift, Knight, Schneider, Central Refrigerated (owned by Swift), Tyson Foods, Con-Way Truckload, and Prime. Between 1988 and 2003 I worked for Digby Southwest, JB Hunt, Werner, Swift (3weeks), Knight, Roadrunner, Maverick, Interstate Distributor, Crete, and US Xpress. Of all the companies I worked for between 1988 and 2003, they all had their ups and downs except Swift. Swift was all down and no up and I spent more time with Knight and Interstate than anyone else. I have spent most of the last 10 years in the Middle East (and decided there is little hope for this region as long as they cling to an archaic culture...but that's another story). In January, I plan on returning to trucking and of the companies I said I checked on above, I have choosen Prime as my number 1 choice. First I don't want to pay $2500 - $5000 to get my CDL back. Not that I can't... I just don't see any sense in doing so when it can be avoided. Prime will hire regardless of where you live (except MT, ND, and SD). So I am curious why Prime is no longer on your potential list. If you do not have a CDL and providing they accept you, Prime will help you get your permit if you need it, put you through roughly 4 weeks of PSD training at no pay ($200. advance ea week though) and then get you tested for the CDL. Once you get your CDL, or if you already have it and they accept you, they will put you through a phase of training that will pay you $600. week. This will last roughly 4 - 8 weeks depending on your progress. Don't quote me on training time though (my "on the fly memory" is prone to errors these days! ) Anyway, once you get past the training, you can earn anywhere bewtween .36 mile and .47 cents per mile including fuel bonuses. And if your willing to run, you can get some pretty decent mileage. Of course I am basing what I am saying here on what I have read on different threads. So based upon what I have read, I have decided on Prime. I'm also hoping I can talk my son-in -law from the Philippines to get his visa and come team up with me. I don't know about you, but if Prime will have me, that's where I'm going. Go Navy! (ACB-1 & USS Tripoli LPH-10)
Prime is no longer on my possible list because they have turned me down due to having plates and screws in my left arm. They told me that I would have to lift a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 200 LBS (tarping) for flatbeds. I cannot lift over 100 LBS due to the stress on the plates and screws. Thanks for the other information though it is helpful. I am stuck between CRST for an 8 month contract and Maverick right now having trouble deciding who is best to go with.
Bummer! I can't help you out too much with CRST and Maverick. I tried Maverick because they said they could get me home every weekend. And they did too. They forgot to tell me that I would arrive home sometime Sat morning (usually late AM) and have to leave Sun evening (I guess that's what they called a weekend... but it didn't fly with me). I spent my "weekends" sleeping! That didn't last too long. Lessons learned they say....
