Lots of 3406's were water aftercooled, All of them up until the B models were and even they were up till maybe 87 or so. I have an 88 that is still water cooled, it is the difference between a 400 b model and a 425 b model.
Maybe so. But every one I had was a regular old cac. I was responding to a guy that said 'a 3406 uses water cooled, I think'
What smallpackage is saying is correct. There is such a thing as too cold of air, the fuel systems compensating for the denser air by dumping fuel or dumping fuel because its not at its designated optimum operating temp. Example on my weekend fun car I'd have to either decrease the size on my intercooler at certian temps because the air was getting to dense or completely write a new fuel map to fix the problem. If I didnt the car would drop 100whp right off the bat, foul plugs and generally have bad run conditions through out the rev range
With a properly functioning cooling system the engine operating temperature shoud remain in the optimum range.
