I had a volvo with an ISX in the shop not too long ago with this same problem. It wound up being the ECM. It would log a dtc though when it died, something like ECM loss of power, I forget the exact DTC. I had a breakout harness on the ECM plug and there was power and ground at the ECM when it powered down. Replaced ECM and it was all better. Good luck

Yes it would derate but the lose of both the fuel rail pressure sensor and the cam sensor, how would the engine coup with proper fueling amounts and timing? I can see it leading to a derating if it is one but two I think the ECM would kick the engine to a critical condition and shut it down. Cummins should have been able to track the sensors individually while it was running and see where it tripped the shutdown.

I'm wondering if BigCam, your ECM change out also included a wiring harness or sensor changes?

Have you added any accessories lately or do you have any that are not working??. If you have added accessories and happened to choose the panel circuit that powers the ECM, it could be overloading the circuit and popping a breaker shutting down the ECM. Let it cool and it resets and the truck starts.

No add on to the engine all stock. It is a 2006 egr engine 832000 miles no let downs. well taken care of all service at 20000 and updated at cummins. I ran 582 miles today with no problem. The first time they said the exhaust pressure senor plug had shorted out it was showing 49 psi all the time. I now thinking of opening the wiring harness from the exhaust sensor to the computer to see if a wire is rub bare. It does not derate just shut down. Also it did throw codes for all the sensors on 5 volt system. They did check the sensor on turbo and egr (both) just couldn't believe they did not check the cam and fuel pressure. But i'm learning all this as I go. They did update the ecu for the egr durability and some other number code i can't remember paper work is at home. also they treated me good only charged for two hours and they worked on it for 5 hours but found nothing.

With the engine running, try to wiggle the wire harness that connects the ECM to the fire wall. This may also be just an ignition power feed problem too. I really can't see any one sensor failure causing a shut down. You would have to loose both cam and engine sensors at the same time, very rare, other sensors would cause the engine to run rough or derate from my experience. Shutdown solenoid is other possibility. If the engine is loosing ignition power it will keep track of "key-on/off cycles". For example, you check the number of key cycles, lets say it is at 1000 cycles. Today you start the truck twice, and it shuts down faulty one time, but you leave the key on. Recheck the key cycles and it now says 1003. This would indicate a loss of ignition power during the shutdown event. If the engine shut down for some other reason, since the key is on the ECM would still also be on. This would not count as a key cycle and your total key cycles would stay at 1002 at the end of the day.

I meant ANY accessories, satellite radio, lights, anything that uses electricity.

Well just got done running for four days and it never shut down. Also it is running better since the ecm update. The fuel silanoid was replaced a month ago by cummins because of poor fuel mileage. Another throw a part at it. I then replaced the exhaust gas pressure senor and got my fuel mileage back after spending over 400 dollars to have to check it out by cummins and to have them tell me the ecm said truck is getting 6.1 mpg lifetime ave. I get 7.1 ave all the time this by pencil and paper not dashboard they didnot believe me i guess. They backed it out saying there was nothing wrong again. Once again no adds on to truck or engine. I'm going to un zip tie the wiring harness from the engine to see if there any where the wires have rubbed thought and will try shaking the wires at the fire wall. I did shake and pull and push on all wire going to the computer, senors and firewall so did cummins it never even coughed. Just knowing this demon is still alive some where in my truck.

It is very possible to have a wire rubbing somewhere, or partially broken internally too. Now that stuff has been handled and your engine worked on it is also possible the bad wire has been moved enough to stop the problem from happening for now. These can be really hard and time consuming to find, like a needle in a haystack. I hope you find it!
