I'm not sure about new engines.
But I do know all engines recirculate fuel, or do not.
Series 60 engines were 10 micron fuel filters and no other engine recirculated more fuel.
No fuel tank heaters had no issue running running in -50℉ in the Northern states a few years ago with just winterized pump fuel. changed fuel filters every 10,000 miles with oil change.

My understanding is that 2 microns is what the secondary filter needs to be. Has been for years. You can use whatever micron you want for the primary. The lower the micron number the sooner it will plug. A physically larger filter can be used without any negative consequences. You just need to be sure you get a filter with threads and gasket size to match whatever head you have. Ex. Baldwin BF584, Cummins FF202, Baldwin BF596. Donaldson P550823
