What should I expect on driving thru 550 out NM seems good portion of it is tribal land . I pre planned to stop at the Ute mountain plaza in Co

 

From ABQ to Shiprock US 550 and 64 are good roads. IIRC it's 4 lanes the whole way.

 

Drive through during day.

Drunk Indians sleep on the road at night. Cops don't even bother with them anymore.

Remember in the late 90's, i believe, a father/son team were shot and killed by Native American teenagers on 550. They drove for KLLM or FFE, can't remember which. They were hauling candy and the trailer was broken into by the kids. Middle of the night and they had thrown stuff on the highway so the truck would have to stop. This was back when it was still two lane.

 

I'm on 550 at least once a week, sometimes more. Quite a few big potholes right now, so watch that.

Haven't seen any drunk indians IN the road. Shiprock seems to be the worst for drunks/drugs.

Watch for elk in winter on 550, and between Cortez to Monticello

 

It was easy driving during the night . Liked the fact it was a 4 lane highway until I got to Colorado. Nice scenery in Utah so far
