Low NOx kits as far as I understand are lower compression pistons and an ECM reflash. I can't say if that is your problem, but I have seen a reflash fix the smoking issue before. I would assume it had the correct file in it if they spent thousands of dollars trying to fix it, but who knows.
My truck does same heavy smoke when its cold even when plugged in. Smells like raw fuel when its hot out burns eyes etc. Freightliner replaced all injectors didnt work . tried a different ecm didnt work. So like an idiot i buy new motor that didnt work either. My neighbor has same truck same dealer same motor his is a 15 mine is a 16. His normal running trk cold or not he get 7.5 mpg i get 6.5 he run pedal to floor i run 63 avg. Itbaffles me
Hey @GreatApe your thoughts on this my 12.7 has a hot tune 500 hp plus and runs like a raped ape but my fuel mileage is in the tank 5.2 mpg running 1400 rpm 62 mph it get 4.8 running 68 mph 1550 rpm it killing my pocket book. Bought this truck this way and only owned it the last two month but can not get over 5 mpg. It a FLD 120 2002 year 13 speed 3.42 rears mileage is done pencil on paper. Was thinking on a factory tune to get the mileage up. 574 rounds trips 80k one way empty back. your thoughts?
Had mine series 60 rebuilt by freightliner. Had same issue. Since i got the bullgear done, the idler gear was off, what they told me at dealership. Also replaced 2 injectors 25000km after a complete rebuilt due to pre mature cumbustion. I sugest get the Oil and coolant sample tested.
Just wanted to post an update. Still haven't fixed the issue. My truck is going back in for another inframe with the higher comp pistons. Just rereading the thread and was curious again about the low nox rebuild kits. My motor came with the low comp pistons...so wouldn't the ecm already be tuned for this? its a 93 motor. Also I will try get the part number of the kit the mechanic ordered. I believe I gave him a kit number or he got it off someone else. I think he had the same motor as mine (gk) in the shop with the high comp pistons and used that kit number. I can't really remember as this has been dragged out over a long period of time. Also I have a laptop with dddl on it so if someone can chime in on the 1/2 setting to see if it helps I can at least try that.
1/2 setting has the motor run on 3 holes at idel I don't see how this helps but ive never tried it myseld my Detroit smokes on cold start as well been doing it for 2 years
It works because those 3 holes have to work harder to keep engine running at idle. The burn temp in those 3 cylinders is high enough to stop the cold smoke.
I’d like to know what constitutes a lo nox OH. I can tell you, it’s not lower compression pistons. 15:1 or 16.5:1.are both readily available from Detroit and Aftermarket. I know the timing is changed, mainly an ecm reflash, from what I can see. Mechanical parts are the same as original, depending on the year, 15:1 cast or 16.5:1 forged. Any info on what a lo nox OH amounts to, is appreciated. I read way back when it was mandated, reading it amounted to a 5% retarding if timing. As far as smoke on start up, isn’t there a atmospheric sensor, mounted on intake, that can cause cold start smoke?
To control the smoke there has to be a few settings and tables set up in the ECM to work when half engine mode is on. It works by advancing the timing about 6 degrees. That and the added pulsewidth increase peak pressure enough to eliminate smoke
