The load I picked up in Denver turned out to be one of those super heavy ones where I couldn't fill up with fuel. I was actually overweight if I had more than 1/4 tank, but I fudged a bit and put in a little under a half. Generally the scale people won't bother ya if you're only a couple hundred over, though Missouri did make me sweat a minute before giving me the green light to go
. I was very glad to get it to Elkton and be rid of it.
They hadn't gotten me a preplan yesterday by the time I delivered, so I grabbed an empty and deadheaded up to Mt Jackson to spend the night. I was awakened this morning by a QC beep with a preplan that was preloaded at the same place I delivered and was going to Jackson, TN. I had to turn it down because my 70 is too low. I've only got 13.25 hours for the next two days. But I could have squeaked it by if they had given me the load yesterday. It was ready. I could have picked it up last night instead of wasting time getting an empty and driving up here. But in any company this large, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, and stupid things happen all the time as a result. There have been times I've done a drop and hook somewhere, gone up to a truck stop and ten minutes later gotten a preplan for a load that picks up right where I just delivered. It's certainly frustrating, especially when you're low on hours. It's such a waste.
Anyway, griping aside, they gave me another preplan for a load picking up in Waynesboro, VA this afternoon going to Charlotte, NC tomorrow (pd miles-307).
Don't know if I've mentioned it or not yet, so I'll do so now. I have a hometime request in for Memphis on the 10th. We'll see if I make it this time.Rattlebunny and JustSonny Thank this. -

The recruiters were at my school a couple days ago. New drivers as follows:
Training week 1-4 $450/week
Training week 5-6 $500/week
0-3 months .25/mile
3 months .26/mile
4 months .28/mile
6 months .30/mile
9 months .31/mile
1 year .32/mile
2 years .33/mile
3 years .34/mile
4 years .36/mile
5 years .38/mile
For flat bed add .01 cent/mile for all of the above. This is the rates at the Phoenix Terminal.
1nonly,
Thank you for all the posts and keep up the good work, it is a great insight for us folks just breaking into the business!Rattlebunny and JustSonny Thank this. -
This is from 2006. Don't know if it is current. Swift cut CPM during recession and there has been some discussion here on the forum about whether or not CPM has returned to pre-recession levels.

Well, my info was handed to us in class just 2 days ago so it should be current at least for the west. Sure hope I am wrong though since yours looks much sweeter!

My school informs us that out of the four carriers they pre-hire to, Swift, Warner, Covenant and May, May pays the most for new drivers though I don't have the exact figures. Swift was my last choice because of the pay and the fact that I can't take the truck home on home time. They have a 50 mile rule on that and I live 30 miles from the terminal. That would not be a big deal except for the fact that I ride a motorcycle and would have difficulty transporting all the gear back and forth. Yeah I know, I could take a cab but that's a 50 dollar bill one way. Other than that, as far as I can see, they are all starter companies with the usual pro's and con's that go with that. At least I do have a pre-hire from Swift so far and be it good, bad or ugly at least it will be a start!

I delivered the load in Charlotte on the 6th with no problems. They had sent me a preplan that morning for a load that picked up in Fort Lawn, SC as soon as I could get there and delivered in Columbus on the 7th (pd miles- 506).
I was driving up I77 just north of Charlotte on Friday morning when I saw a trooper behind me with his lights going. I pulled over, a little confused because I didn't think I was doing anything wrong. Turned out, he just wanted to do a level 3 inspection (the one where they just check paperwork). I've never been pulled over for an inspection before- only at weigh stations. I was a bit surprised. But hey, first time for everything, right?
So I got to Columbus and dropped the trailer. They only had 2 empties available, and both were in bad shape. I had planned to go to our yard to spend the night anyway, so I figured I'd just get it fixed at the shop, rather than bobtail out and have to try to get an empty somewhere else. Problem was, the trailer shop at Columbus closes at 1530 and is closed all weekend. So I had to drop the trailer and hunt down an empty somewhere else, anyway. They sent me to Obetz to get one.
Then they had me deadhead up to Ypsilanti, MI to get a load going to Memphis (pd miles- 878 ) which delivers on Tuesday at 1100 and cannot deliver early, so they are a day late with my hometime request. That's not bad, better than a week late- or more.JustSonny, alex94, Cooper09 and 1 other person Thank this.
