Not sure if I'm following your logic, pupeperson. If I move the 5th wheel one notch back into the trailer, then about 500 lbs is transferred from the trailer axle to the drive axle. It's about 500 lbs per notch on the 5th wheel. It's something I learned in '77 and it still seems to work today, and it's worked on Fords, Peterbilts, Kenworths, and Internationals in my experience. What kind of truck do you drive?

I have a Pete and an International. But I've also had KW's, Freightliners and Volvo's. It doesn't matter what brand of tractor we're talking about. The king pin doesn't move when you slide the 5th wheel, and it would have to move in order for the total weight being placed upon the fifth wheel to change. The only thing that changes is how that weight is distributed on the tractor. You can go weigh the tractor with a connected trailer w/ the 5th wheel all the way back or all the way forward, and the total weight of the tractor won't change at all.

The total weight doesn't change. You are correct. The distribution of the weight changes. I was originally replying to a forum member that wanted to know how that weight distribution changes by moving the 5th wheel.

This is incorrect. There are currently no points for any weight violations.

*Hands the gauntlet of lost causes to pupeperson* You're going to need this, because that misconception just won't die around here.

moving the 5th wheel only changes weight from drives to steers. steers to drives.

i pull a flatbed with fixed spreads. the trailer weight doesn't change what so ever.
i also pull tanker on occasion. they also have fixed axles. they also don't change weight by moving 5th wheel.

don't know what you learned in 77 and how it could possibly still work today. but apparently it don't work for the rest of us.

i have my 5th wheel set for 12.4 on the steers with full tanks. if i'm heavy on the drives. the load gets moved around. no if's and's or but's.
my 5th wheel also has no room to go back. it's on the last notch. even if i wanted to move it. to which i wouldn't. i can't anyways.

It is a reference to a misstatement made by a visibly tired Barack Obama on the 2008 campaign trail:

You were under 34000 on each tandem so the violation had nothing to do with weight. It was a nonconforming trailer issue, but the odd thing to me is that in my experience TN measures legal trailer length from pin to rear end of trailer + overhang and that limit is 51'0.
