There are a lot businesses that rent trucks to guys who want to test for CDL. They provide the person who drives the truck to the test and that it will pass dot inspection. It isn't cheap but does exist. I would worry more about getting hired with no experience and no driving school diploma, gonna be tough to insure and as many have stated insurance is the name of the game.

It is possible to "rent" a truck to test in. I was speaking to a guy that did this a while back in Indiana. The place that does the testing "rents" trucks right there to test in. However, you are NOT going into a Commercial rental agency and rent one. Good luck though!

Schneider now has a no cost no contract CDL school. Might be worth checking out.

    Wow ...

You don't "rent" a truck to test in, you rent a driver and truck or you test at a third party place where they provide a truck for you to test in - many states have third party testers.

Have you considered going through a paid program? I went through Roehl's program last year because of some of the concerns that you had. They were one of the few that I found that pay you from day one while obtaining your CDL (you will obtain your permit prior to showing up). I've been here 6 months now and have no complaints and am projected to finish my contract in 9 months

You're making it sound like the 3rd party testing sites just out of the goodness of their hearts put a body in a truck at no cost. Trust me they do not! You pay for the use of that vehicle. I call it rent, you can call it whatever you want. Money is still green whatever you call it! I can't find the actual amount my friend paid but he tested at Prosafe in Indy. Even on the prosafe website, they refer to it as "renting".

I’m I Columbus Oh. But I’m trying to avoid those paid training programs only because they all end up OTR and me and my wife have definitely decided we can’t do that atm, I have seen a lot of those food delivery companies will hire on with little to no experience.

But how’s the home time? Like I said the wife and I aren’t at a point where I can be gone long. Obviously I’ll be OTR with the trainer but what’s the fleet selections like?

Have you considered a local community college? Most have weekend programs and the cost is minimal.
