I use my Jake's everywhere except city driving. Even then if it's a long stretch where I'm doing 45 or 50, I'll use them.

I hauled milk all over the the Midwest. , the tiny little communities I ran through in order to get to some dairies were just inundated with trucks.

I did my best to drive like a Saint accelerating and slowing.

Consideration is a Virtue in my book.

I've seen a lot of "No Unmuffled Engine Brakes" signs but have rarely seen them outside of Colorado. Most every little town I ran through on the two lanes around these parts just say "No Engine Brakes". And most of those towns don't have any cops to enforce it anyway. But if you ever come through Bradley, Ar on hwy 29 from Louisiana heading up to catch I 30 at Hope, that cop loves to write tickets for it

I think what he may be referring to is a compression brake makes more braking HP at higher RPMS, hence a higher horsepower level.
Again from the Jacobs operators manual:

Driving with Your Jacobs Engine Brake
Since the engine brake is most effective at higher engine speeds, gear selection is very important. To obtain maximum retarding power, use the lowest possible gear without exceeding the recommended engine speed for engine braking. Best retarding performance is obtained at engine speeds between 2100 rpm and high idle. Below 1700 rpm, retarding power may be significantly reduced

These discussions run exactly parallel with some Harley Davidson riders credo:
    Loud pipes save lives.
I ride a motorcycle, despise loud pipes, and think those motorcycle riders that put them on display do as much damage to motorcycle public relations as truck drivers do with improper engine compression brake use.
And some towns have made the signs to read any excessive noise will be ticketed. Hard to enforce though.

I think with motorcycles it’s a bit different because some may come like that from the factory. Also, there are very few motorcycles out there compared to semi trucks.
